Not sure where to post this!
But has anybody bought a private number plate as a gift for somebody?
What's the process you go through of putting it on their car etc?
Thanks!

I recently bought a private number plate from absolutereg.co.uk

i paid the extra £24.99 sent them my log book and then they done the transfer within 2 days for me, got a new log book back and just put them on. I had to just let me insurance company know too

Was so much easy than i thought it would be

We all have personalised plates, all bought as presents for special occasions. Buy it and you get the purchase certificate and then we did ours online with DVLA and followed the steps. Have also moved plates on cars (Iv had my plate for 8 years on 3 different cars) and always been straight forward. We bought ours direct from a dvla

Ditto previous poster. Fees included in price of number plate. Did it all online. DH delighted with his for a significant birthday.

Probably should have made it clear that you have to have the plates made up. Did his locally under £25.

I gave my oh a private plate on Christmas. Easy enough to do.
Presentation wise, I went on eBay and bought her a miniature number plate letting with the registration on it and then gave her the paperwork.

Bear in mind that there are charges when you change the plate to a different car. Mine has been on ten different cars.

Thanks for all the replies!
Another question. He might be buying a new car soon, how long can you wait to put the number plate on the car? I don't want to put it on the car, and then have to change it again. Does it have to be put onto the car in a certain amount of time? Thanks

If you’re not putting it on a car straight away you have to pay to put it “on retention”. I can’t remember how much although it’ll be on the DVS site. Check how much it is to transfer it though, it might be cheaper than putting it on retention. When I last changed my car I think it cost about £80ish to change my plate over-I chose to just accept that as part of the cost of the new car

rslsys · 31/10/2018 08:30

I think when you buy from DVLA you get 12 month’s Retention as part of the deal.
Worth checking though as I haven’t bought a new one for a few years.

Can I suggest that you make sure that the recipient will appreciate the gift first.

The OH of a friend of mine did this. She felt awful when she received it as she thinks that personalised number plates are extremely naff and a waste of money - something they didn't have a lot of.

fussychica · 31/10/2018 08:59

Yes 12 month retention as part of the deal. Was in a similar situation but in the end have decided to keep our car until this time next year so he put it on our current vehicle.
Re naffness, I know lots of people who feel this way so do check.

Thankyou!
He's showed me the one he likes, I've got one myself and he likes it. So I don't think he would be annoyed with me getting one for him.
Thanks for all the help x
