How long does it take you to get to work?

My commute is getting madder. I live 8 miles from my office. It has taken 1hour 20 minutes to get 6miles on the bus. I’m still here with two miles to go.

For comparison, the return home takes 30mins.

There’s got to be a better way.

Carpool with someone else going the same way so that it reduces the amount of stopping that the bus does

nornironrock · 30/10/2018 09:15

Bike. Moped. Run. All of these things are quicker than that. The city closest to me is a nightmare too, can take 90 minutes to get 9 miles.

GameOldBirdz · 30/10/2018 09:16

Cycle? Moped?

My journey to work takes an hour and a half door to door: 15 minute walk, one hour train, 15 minute walk.

Iruka · 30/10/2018 09:20

15-20 mins depending on traffic, 10 miles

dimsum123 · 30/10/2018 09:22

10-20 mins drive depending on traffic

Iruka · 30/10/2018 09:22

But i had to go on public transport once, it took over an hour.

  1. Bus, walk to main station or walk to minor station and train - minimum 20 mins could be upto an hour
  2. Train - 20 mins
  3. Walk - 20 mins
Would not want to do that much, but cycling along the busy but direct country road would be a death wish
Stripybeachbag · 30/10/2018 09:28

10 miles. About 30 minutes on way in and up to an hour on the way out.

Lauren83 · 30/10/2018 09:30

I live 8 miles from my work, takes 18 minutes on a Saturday in the car and usually around 40 min on a weekday

AdamNichol · 30/10/2018 09:32

2 to 2.5 hours - 30 mins drive to station, 40 mins train, tube and other tube, 15 mins walk to office. Reverse for way home, except Guildford traffic ups the station to home leg to 45 mins.
Want to get around quickly - buy a vespa.
For me, that'd still be around an hour and a half by motorbike (to NE London); and it's dead time - at least I can watch iPlayer on train.

SuperstarDJ · 30/10/2018 09:33

10 miles. Anything from 35 min - 90 min depending on traffic. On average, I’d say about 45-50min.

Babybearsporij · 30/10/2018 09:34

Luckily I drive and don't work 9-5, so takes me about 15 minutes. If I had to get public transport it would take me hours and I'd have to get a taxi on the way home.

flamingofridays · 30/10/2018 09:34

10 min walk! until Friday when I move then its going to be A 30 min drive.

I sympathise op I used to have a journey similar to yours and it was utterly shite!

DonnaDarko · 30/10/2018 09:35

An hour and a half at the most

5 minute drive to the train station (DP drops me off)
Train for 50 minutes
Another train for 5
5 minute walk to the station

Plenty of time for my netflix fix

bubbles092 · 30/10/2018 09:37

Takes me about 20 minutes. I drive and work 11 miles away. Add 8 miles onto my journey which is an extra 15 mins as I take my DS to childminders first, then pick him up after work. Altogether my journey adds up to around 30 miles a day.

bubbles092 · 30/10/2018 09:39

If I got public transport, it would take me just over 2 hours as the bus goes all through the villages before it gets to my work.
I would also have to walk from home to get DS from childminders which takes around 30 mins. Would be a hassle getting public transport to where I work! I'd rather not go in at all.

Gromance02 · 30/10/2018 09:40

When the schools are off, like this morning, it takes around 7-8 minutes. When it is term-time, can take up to 40 minutes! I don't have children. Just the volume of traffic goes mad!

HeronLanyon · 30/10/2018 09:40

Depending on where I am daily it can be a 4 minute walk up to 3 hour train each way (lawyer).

RhinestoneCowgirl · 30/10/2018 09:41

15 min cycle, slightly longer on way home as uphill.

Welshmum16 · 30/10/2018 09:45

30 mins including dropping off child for 14 miles,

But live and work rurally so have to drive as no buses.

Are there any other bus routes?

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 30/10/2018 09:47

It's a 30 minute walk or a ten minute cycle. I prefer to walk because I live on a 20 percent hill so riding up that at the end of the day with all my shopping and work stuff is a total bitch.

MiddlingMum · 30/10/2018 09:58

Between 5 and 20 seconds, depending on where I am in the house when a client arrives - I work from home.

I used to do a 7 mile commute by bike and arrive quicker than a colleague who lived in the next road who drove. She kept wanting to car share but I just kept on pointing out how much faster/cheaper/healthier it was to cycle.

ShotsFired · 30/10/2018 10:01

40mins of A-road-Motorway-A road to go about 35miles

If I left later, it'd take me at least double, probably more.

creativeusername · 30/10/2018 10:02

15-20 minutes drive to work, 30-45 coming home. I live 4.2 miles away. It would probably be quicker to cycle if I wasn't so fat and unfit Blush

footballagain3 · 30/10/2018 10:02

DH drops me off at train station - 10 minute
Train - 25 minutes (if it's on time)
Walk 5 minutes

NorthEndGal · 30/10/2018 10:04

5 days a week I work from my home studio (down the hall) or I'm at the beach (10 minute drive).
2 days a week I provide childcare, those days I have a 15 minute drive each way.
