How long does it take you to get to work?

My commute is getting madder. I live 8 miles from my office. It has taken 1hour 20 minutes to get 6miles on the bus. I’m still here with two miles to go.

For comparison, the return home takes 30mins.

There’s got to be a better way.

Bike 25 mins or walk 15 mins + 20 min bus. So it's quicker on the bike but its getting a bit cold for me and I like the bus ride in the winter.

Steelesauce · 30/10/2018 10:07

7 minute drive, much better then my old 40/50 minute commute.

MaxPepsi · 30/10/2018 10:09

About 4 miles.
It's a 10 minute journey, apart from when the kids are at school.
My commute takes in 4 different schools. So it can take anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes.
By bus it would take over an hour as it doesn't go direct, so I'd walk it if I couldn't drive.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 30/10/2018 10:10

Hour and half on the bus.... it's 15 minutes by car.... I cannot wait to pass my test.

MartyMcFly1984 · 30/10/2018 10:11

4 minutes to the closest office. 10 or 15 to the other two offices. Can’t complain.

explodingkitten · 30/10/2018 10:11

1hr45min. Taking driving lessons now.

dancemom · 30/10/2018 10:12

25 minute walk door to door

If I get the train its 3 minute walk to the station, 2 minutes on the train then another 3 minute walk to the office

Bus would take about 15 minutes depending on traffic

I love my morning walk though

Ragwort · 30/10/2018 10:13

Also a 25 min walk, sometimes my DS will drop me off now that he can drive and likes to have use of my car Grin.

EBearhug · 30/10/2018 10:16

25 mins. But today was 1hr 10, 50 minutes of which sat in one queue. So that was fun.

theboxofdelights · 30/10/2018 10:16

3 min cycle ride or 10 min walk. I moved for convenience this year and it is fabulous.

theboxofdelights · 30/10/2018 10:17

I had a 2 hour commute when I worked in London.

youngestisapsycho · 30/10/2018 10:18

25 min walk or 7 min cycle...

MsRinky · 30/10/2018 10:23

5 miles, 9 minutes drive, 10 including dropping DH off at the station. People mock Milton Keynes and roundabouts, but it's a very efficient place.

OhTheRoses · 30/10/2018 10:23

By car: which is how I travel the 11 miles.
30 mins in school hols or providing I'm out before 7.15 or after 8.45. Inbetween times can be an hour.

Public transport: 10 min walk to stn, 30 mins on train 1, change for train 2 20 mins, 20 min walk.

champagneplanet · 30/10/2018 10:25

2.8 miles away, takes 10 mins in the car.

Takes around 50 mins on public transport, would be a walk, 2 buses or a bus and a train. That's based on them being on time, public transport here is woeful.

pinkhorse · 30/10/2018 10:26

I cycle 5 miles. It takes 20 minutes.

TheHobbitMum · 30/10/2018 10:27

OP I'd cycle or car share with that commute time, that's awful! Cycling wouldn't take anytime at all.
Thankfully I can walk to work and takes me 6mins

BevBrook · 30/10/2018 10:29

One minute, I just walk through the kitchen to the office.
It used to be an hour each way from east to west London on bus then two tubes.

PragmaticWench · 30/10/2018 10:30

I drive and it's 1 hour and 40 minutes. That includes a nursery and then school drop off, so just under an hour without those. It would take 2.5 hours on public transport and that wouldn't include the drop offs as there's no public transport going near those.

YBR · 30/10/2018 12:22

1 Usual: 30 mins train with twice 10-15 min cycle (i.e. both ends)
2 in horrid weather: drive 30-40 mins unless I go in rush hour which is around 60 mins.
3 all else fails: walk-bus-walk 25+60+25 mins.
4 final option if agreed with manager: none i.e. work from home.

kaytee87 · 30/10/2018 12:32

Could you cycle? Would be a lot quicker.
Or try to change your working hours so you're missing rush hour.

Alexaaaa · 30/10/2018 12:58

45-60 minutes on the bus depending on traffic or 20-30 minutes on my scooter (journey is 4.5 miles into the city centre).

I'm trying to keep my bike out as long as possible this year while it's dry as it's so cheap to run.

PersonaNonGarter · 30/10/2018 13:09

Thanks for the replies. It is good to hear that I am not alone on the time disparity. Somehow, the fact that coming out is so much quicker than going into town make it all more frustrating.

So interesting/depressing that the solution is private transport. I know it is obvious that it would be quicker, but equally more cars = everyone going slower.

8mins in the car every early morning or at the weekends. About 30mins in the car on a typical weekday morning

About 15-50 mins on the bus depending on the traffic

bumblingbovine49 · 30/10/2018 14:10

I have the opposite, it takes about an hour to get home in the evening, either on the bus or in a car
