What temperature do you set your thermostat to?

As the colder weather kicks in, I'm wondering if I should go wild and set the thermostat to 20 (when we're home and awake), or stick to a conservative 18.

This has got me wondering whether people in the north set a lower home temperature, and how much depends on your childhood heating situation (chilly in my case).

What is everyone else going for this winter?

I'm in Scotland and usually have it set at 18 degrees or 14/15 overnight. If it's chilly in the evening we'll put the fire on in the living room instead of overheating the rest of the house. We also have an electric blanket.

shutlingsloe · 29/10/2018 18:22

Northern England- 18 during the morning and evening, 14 at night and daytime.

calpop · 29/10/2018 18:24

bloody hell! Im a soft Southerner and its 22 or 20 here!

Haberpop · 29/10/2018 18:24

18° in the evening and 12° overnight and during the day time. If we are cold we light the fire which keeps the lounge warm and comfortable. Chilly upbringing, live in East Anglia.

Chesterfieldsofa · 29/10/2018 18:25

We set it to 'comfortable in the living room'. The actual thermostat usually is around 17°, but it's in the hall. The living room is much warmer than that.

Spamfrittersforeveryone · 29/10/2018 18:25

19 during day, 10 at night.

kaytee87 · 29/10/2018 18:25

I'd be happy setting overnight to cooler actually but we have a 2yo

ShatnersBalloonFromPennywise · 29/10/2018 18:26

20° here. I don't have it on through the night, this house seems to hold its heat well.

Chesterfieldsofa · 29/10/2018 18:26

And only in the daytime - do people usually keep the heating on overnight? I don't think we can even set ours to do that, it's either on or off, and it's off overnight.

PhilomenaDeathsHeadHawkMoth · 29/10/2018 18:26

20, then keep it on 15 when we're out if it's very cold.

MirandaWest · 29/10/2018 18:26

Overnight it’s on 9. When the thermostats on then 17 or 18 usually

Jackshouse · 29/10/2018 18:27

18c durring the day time in the NE. We only had central heating down stairs when I was a child but my bed wqa directly above the aga.

I do sometimes put the fire on the evenings and I have the electric blanket on most evenings.

IdahoCrow · 29/10/2018 18:27

15-16, thermostat in hall though.

PhilomenaDeathsHeadHawkMoth · 29/10/2018 18:27

We're in London.

Oblomov18 · 29/10/2018 18:27

19

Interesting the variety.

mrsoutnumbered · 29/10/2018 18:27

Usually 21, although it's on the ground floor and our living room is on the 1st floor so it's usually too hot so I might turn it down!

StrongerSingle · 29/10/2018 18:27

18/19 first thing and in the evenings.
15 once we are in bed :)

Cambalamb · 29/10/2018 18:27

18c. Yesterday I turned it up to 22 for a bit as it was chilly.

Cambalamb · 29/10/2018 18:28

Turn it down after 9pm to about 15c.

Jackshouse · 29/10/2018 18:28

Chesterfieldsofa do you not have a thermostat? It means your heating only comes on it if it set to come on or ypunahve put it on AND the temperature is below a certain levels. It also stops your home from getting too hot.

SoyDora · 29/10/2018 18:29

18 generally. Sometimes ramp it up to 20 if I’m particularly chilly, but not for long!
14 overnight.

dementedpixie · 29/10/2018 18:30

About 19 usually. Off overnight

calpop · 29/10/2018 18:30

in fact ive just looked at the Nest and its on 24 at the moment.

You lot are hardy!

ShowOfHands · 29/10/2018 18:32

17 when it's on. Never on overnight.

We had a single gas heater growing up which was of little use.

We do have thermals, decent duvets, blankets and hot water bottles. I hate a really warm house.

Cambalamb · 29/10/2018 18:33

My teens moan they are cold at times but they are sitting still for hours on their phones or studying. I come in from an hour's brisk dog walk over fields and cook so get nice and warm.
