What temperature do you set your thermostat to?

As the colder weather kicks in, I'm wondering if I should go wild and set the thermostat to 20 (when we're home and awake), or stick to a conservative 18.

This has got me wondering whether people in the north set a lower home temperature, and how much depends on your childhood heating situation (chilly in my case).

What is everyone else going for this winter?

Ours comes on for 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the evening; it’s set at 17.

If we get cold at any other time we light the fire or stick another layer on.

Nenic · 29/10/2018 18:34

21 but I boost it a lot

ButtMuncher · 29/10/2018 18:36

Currently having this war with DH. I'd set it to 18, he wants it at 19, and have it come on overnight at that temperature Confused I'm very much no heating overnight person. Happens every year. I'll show him this thread to make him realise he's bonkers to have it on overnight Grin

FabulouslyFab · 29/10/2018 18:38

22 thru the day and 18 at night but I’m not convinced it speaks to the boiler who does whatever it wants! I only have central heating - no other kind of heating except my hot water bottle Smile

GiantKitten · 29/10/2018 18:41

It does depend on where your thermostat is. Ours is in the hall, but people will leave the front door open for minutes at a time, so then the hall gets cold & the heating comes on much sooner than it needs to fit the rest of the house Hmm

It’s set at either 18.5 or 19 though which generally works well for the rest of the house. I need to find out what the temp is in eg the living room when we all feel ok & then move it in there & set it to that (apart from when we have a fire...)

GiantKitten · 29/10/2018 18:42

Overnight setting is 16. It rarely comes on though.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 29/10/2018 18:43

So it seems 18 is pretty standard. I was secretly hoping everyone else was whacking it up to 22, and I should do likewise!

I really want a tropical microclimate in the bathroom, so I can discard my clothes without flinching. Instead I have a vicious draft from behind the bath panel...

But I will never go back to the days of 2 hours in the morning and two at night, and otherwise put on a gansey.

19 and not on overnight.

Last Winter when it was really bitterly cold Dh set it to stay on low overnight.

darkriver198868 · 29/10/2018 18:50

Got on 18 at the moment.

MissWilmottsGhost · 29/10/2018 18:50

Currently its set on 17 day and night, and I boosted it to 20 this afternoon because I was freezing (heating is broken at work).

I need to set it lower at night and warmer in the day, will probably go for 15 at night, 20 in the mornings and evenings, 18 at other times.

SellFridges · 29/10/2018 18:50

18, but often whack it up when it’s mid winter.

I cannot believe people willingly let their houses drop to 12 degrees?! Anything below 15 is coat weather to me and I am a northerner.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 29/10/2018 18:52

20 always! Turn it off at night though.

GiantKitten · 29/10/2018 18:52

Ah!

You need something like this, OP!

Has to be wall mounted & hardwired but for a quick blast in a bathroom you can’t beat a fan heater Smile

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 29/10/2018 18:53

19 when it's on. 1 1/2 hours in the morning and from 4-10.30 in the evening. Off apart from that. I hate being hot overnight. We're all out in the day, though.

chumbal · 29/10/2018 18:54

18 degrees early morning & evening. 10 degrees rest of time
Modern 'new build'so detested by many mumsnetters but very heat efficient

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 29/10/2018 18:54

Yeah, I did have it on all night at around 12 during the really cold snap last winter.

Cachailleacha · 29/10/2018 18:55

17 for an hour in the morning then 5-9 pm. Turn it on for an hour at a time if we are home in the day on weekends.

MintedLamb · 29/10/2018 18:56

23 here but turned off overnight

HeyMicky · 29/10/2018 18:57

18 when we're home during the day and off at night. South east.

We do have a wood burner with a distribution fan we use on some evenings, otherwise it's cardis and dressing gowns, socks and slippers, and blankets. And a cat.

Biologifemini · 29/10/2018 18:57

17-20
Off at night. I cannot sleep in a stuffy house and like the window slightly open.
I sleep like a log.

GimmeBread · 29/10/2018 18:59

Just now 25 during the day and 22 overnight. But this house is freezing and it never actually reaches that temperature. Drives me bloody crazy.

Time to fit draught excluders on all the doors and windows.

3boysandabump · 29/10/2018 18:59

I don't have a thermostat but my heating is on from 5am-9am and then from 3.30pm- 11pm and that keeps the house at around 18 degrees

BowTieBaby · 29/10/2018 19:00

23 or 24 in the evening, 21 overnight

KarrisWhiteOak · 29/10/2018 19:01

20.5 here during day and off over night. But I’m home all day with two kids. Sometime have the open fire when it gets really cold. ❄️
