Do you ever call people by the wrong names?

I just needed to talk to my best friend about a tricky situation and he gave me strict instructions and I automatically said yes, I'll do that Dad, I promise. He's only 10 years older than me!

My Mother runs through the whole gamut of names of childhood pets, siblings etc when she's shouting for me, it's literally Tim-Cheesecake-Malteser-Joe-Harry-Sooty etc then I roll my eyes and say yes, Malteser here? (That was one of the cats)

Can't be that uncommon can it?

If it’s uncommon then there is a strange localisation in my entire family! Grin

It’s totally normal. We have three boys at home and DSS normally not, they all run the risk of being called every name (including their own) then ‘you, whatever your name is’ Grin

My late MIL used to go through the names of all her children before she got the right one, and now DH does it too. Fortunately we have fewer children so he has a one in three chance of getting it right.

ajandjjmum · 29/10/2018 14:56

I always call DS and DB by the other name - they both begin with the same letter, and it doesn't take much to confuse me! Grin

MissCalamity · 29/10/2018 15:01

How I used to laugh at my Nanna who went through all her 4 children, then her two older grandchildren before she got to my name and she was in her 70's.

I do this in my 30's with just 2 children, who get called either name or the cat's, or even someone completely random...

Upslidedown · 29/10/2018 15:37

I don't call anyone I live with by their name. Of course the problem with calling everyone darling is I get teenage DSS1 asking if I'm talking to him, the dog or possibly one of the chairs.

MiddlingMum · 29/10/2018 15:42

Yes, all the time. We have lots of male family and friends who all weirdly start with the same letter. So, I'll say "Sam, Simon, Stuart, Steve", etc until I get the right one.

I used to work with someone who had had three husbands, all with the same name. She said it kept things simpler Hmm

TheWickedWitchofWestYorkshire · 29/10/2018 15:58

Yes, all the time. Sometimes in class, 2 children will remind me of each other, either in appearance or mannerisms, and I then really struggle to not mix up their names.

I do it with my children, too. What's worse is that I have 1 of each Grin

TheWickedWitchofWestYorkshire · 29/10/2018 16:00

Sometimes I end up calling my children a mishmash of both names as well as the dog's, their cousins' and the kid next door's. It's easier to just call them both "Love" or something.

TheWiseWomansFear · 29/10/2018 16:50

I call my DP my sisters name, my sister mum and my mum the name of my childhood dog... often

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 29/10/2018 17:11

4 boys, always get their names mixed up.

I will often get ds1 and ds4 the wrong way around.
Or ds2 and ds3.
Or ds3 and ds4.

Not usually ds1 and 2, 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 though.

Also get my 2 best friends names the wrong way round - have to concentrate hard so I don't risk offending them, but also do it with their children, keep giving them the wrong boys so have to work out everyone's names and who goes with which parent before opening my big gob and sticking both feet in.

dementedpixie · 29/10/2018 17:13

I keep calling dd by my sister's name and often call my sister dd's name. Very odd

LizzieSiddal · 29/10/2018 17:15

Yes, I mix up my dcs names all the time and I only have two!

I also do it with my sisters and nieces and I often call my brother by my Dh's name.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/10/2018 17:16

Oh yes, my DM - usualy after family had been to visist - went through the names of 9 cousins - male and female, than her other children before she ended up with my name.

I've started, too.

Babybearsporij · 29/10/2018 17:22

Oh how I used to laugh at my Ddad for doing this.

Now I do it and I've only got 2 DC! It's very common.

LucyMorningStar · 29/10/2018 17:23

Aww it's Languid again, being ebullient.

Are you lucid today? Or will the audience be treated to one of your all-nonsense ramblings again?

Yes, the name thing happens to me too.

fussychica · 29/10/2018 17:48

I keep referring to the girlfriend of DS as Zoe which is not her name, fortunately I haven't said it to her....yet!
The mad thing is he has never been out with a Zoe and I don't know anyone called Zoe but I do it all the bloody timeConfused
