Dress code colour question

DP & I have been invited to a party & the invite states dress code is a different colour for men & women.

I don’t own a single item of clothing in this colour. I’ve spent a few days in the shops but there are no suitable dresses.
Do you think the whole outfit has to be the colour or could I get away with a top in the colour?

I’d take it to mean you need to be wearing something that colour not that you need to be dressed head to toe in it

What if you were trans?

Anyway, I imagine a top in the requisite colour would suffice. It is after all a party.
