Worst food you’ve eaten on holiday?

Following on from the worst restaurant you’ve eaten at thread... what’s the worst food you’ve eaten on holiday?

For me it was a... unidentifiable thing... from the hotel buffet we had in Spain. It was a cube, the colour and consistency of watermelon that sort of, disintegrated in the mouth... there were yellow and green chunks of again unidentifiable things inside the cube. The entire thing smelled and tasted like a sweaty gym sock and I swear I felt my tastebuds shrivel up upon tasting. Envy Confused

There was no card on the buffet to say what it was so to this day I have no idea but it remains the single most disgusting thing I’ve ever eaten, and I’m usually a really adventurous eater on holiday! :o

Sat by the sea in Morocco so I ordered a fish platter.
It came with some kind of deep fried newt garnish. Actual bloody fried newt!!!

It was like something out of a Indiana Jones movie.
Although it didn't smell as bad as Dps camel tagine

The soggiest, chewiest squid I’ve ever had the misfortune to eat. DD2 nearly choked on it, we all tried one piece and then left the rest. It’s usually hoovered up!

ShadyFriendandLadyLoofah · 28/10/2018 23:17

@thenumberfaker that’s so disappointing I LOVE squid, rubber band squid is such a let down 😩

Rabbit stew was a memorable one. I’m sure some do eat rabbits but it’s not for me Envy

A whelk. It was at a Michelin starred restaurant that my hosts had kindly taken me to. Tasted like rubber. I actually had no idea it was some kind of sea snail until I got home and googled it!

PJBanana · 29/10/2018 09:50

I’ve spent a lot of time in Asia and I usually love street food.

Ordered a Thai green chicken curry that cost the equivalent of about 20p from a stall. There was something in it that tasted absolutely vile. To this day I do not know what it was, and it put me off street food for a long time afterwards!

sugarbum · 29/10/2018 09:59

I actually got a rubber band in my meal on honeymoon in prague. Took me a while to figure out what was going on there. I chewed. and chewed. and fished it out. yup. rubber band.

A venison curry on holiday in Mauritius. I love venison, had been eating absolutely gorgeous venison dishes the whole time we were there, mostly from all sorts of slightly ramahackle little cafés etc. where the food was out of this world. On our final night we decided to go to the really smart looking restaurant we'd passed as a treat. It was awful, some bits were still raw, some were so old and tough they'd obviously been boiled and boiled for the last God knows how long and didn't come from a deer that was especially good in the first place. It was obvious they had a pot they just kept boiling up adding any old bits of meat to it as they went. All with that uniquely 'bad venison-y' smell of a sewer underlying it. Hideous. I took one mouthful before realising the terrible smell was in fact my dinner and and spent the rest of the night drinking over proof rum in an attempt to burn out any nasties.

A buffet type thing at a Center Parcs in France. The warm food was tepid, the cold foot was tepid, DD puked all night. Happy times!

MawkishTwaddle · 29/10/2018 10:31

Andouillette in Paris. I got mixed up and thought I was ordering lamb.

It's a tripe sausage that actually smells of actual, literal shit. Because it has colon in it.

I enclose a photo for your delectation.

Garlic prawns whilst on holiday in Hawaii. They came in this weird, creamy sauce...it was horrible...I'm not a fussy eater by any standards either. Oddly, the next day I overheard an American couple talking about how lovely the garlic prawns in the restaurant were!

fluffertothegentry · 29/10/2018 10:41

Durian fruit. I could just about cope with the smell as it was outside, but the texture.... Bleeagh.

Pebblespony · 29/10/2018 10:46

Some kind of deli meat at a wedding in France. Tongue maybe? It was vile.

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 29/10/2018 11:02

Fish that was off in Indonesia. I could vomit at the thought now. In fact I wish I hadn't opened the thread!

MrsJayy · 29/10/2018 11:07

A paella in spain it had unidentifiable chewy meat in it the rice was like little bullets and the prawns smelt overly prawny I avoided those.

MrsJayy · 29/10/2018 11:09

I saw sea urchin on a hotel buffet it just looked spiny and was confused how you got into it.

TheNumberfaker · 29/10/2018 11:40

Pebbles, did it have the bobbly bits on it? I remember seeing that in the school dining hall in France. I was a vegetarian at the time, but still wouldn’t have eaten it!

Ioki · 29/10/2018 12:22

Fuck me Mawkish - boak! Envy

Pretty much everything I tried on my recent visit to Turkey...

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 29/10/2018 12:43

Lamb's testicles in Spain. Really need to learn Spanish.

Witchofzog · 29/10/2018 12:46

@Loopylou You couldn't find anything to eat in a whole country? I have just returned from Turkey too and it has some awesome food. What exactly did you have?

Disfordarkchocolate · 29/10/2018 12:48

Soup that looked like pureed brain in France. Never seen anything look less apertising.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 29/10/2018 12:49

Andouillette remains the only thing my very adventurous eater father has ever ordered and been physically unable to eat, Mawkish, so you're not alone. I mean, there's been other things he's left because it wasn't to his taste, or because it just wasn't very good. But for sheer disgustingness, that takes the prize.

For me - every single meal I ate at the small resort I stayed in on Fuerteventura with an ex-BF about 20 years ago.

Cheesymonster · 29/10/2018 12:54

Got caught out at a buffet in Spain this summer when what I thought were onion rings turned out to be extremely rubbery calamari.

Sicario · 29/10/2018 12:59

Brains. Vile.
Tripe. Vile
Rattlesnake. Don't even. It looked like a giant woodlouse. Yes, I ate it.

Loopylou6 · 30/10/2018 12:30

@witchodzog well, we found a burger king in a near by town, so pretty much survived on that 🤣
In all seriousness it was buffet style in the hotel, there was weird things like chopped up hot dogs in a weird red sauce, everything looked minging tbh.
Where did you stay?
