Scary movie for 12 year old

Just reading the thread about scary movies, for 13 year olds. Ds is desperate to watch a horror film, but I don't want to scare him to death. I was considering The Woman in black, but thought all the references to dead children would be a bit traumatic. Any ideas?

What about Esther?

mimibunz · 28/10/2018 16:24

Oops, it’s called The Orphan.

Tattandthis · 28/10/2018 16:25

Texas chainsaw massacre

We did the watcher in the woods with Ds2 (11) and ds1(13) last week. PG but lots of well built up suspense and spooky enough for ds2. In fact way through he said he couldn’t watch anymore and decamped to behind the sofa (still watching) Grin

There doesn’t really seem to be a lot. I ended up putting on Goosebumps on Netflix (a series rather than the newer film). The acting was so awful I had to watch a couple of episodes. There just seems to be animation like Mo star House and Coraline. A bit disappointing really.

hmmwhatatodo · 28/10/2018 16:27

Oops I meant Monster House.

Whatthefunk · 28/10/2018 16:27

Don't think he's quite ready for Texas chainsaw massacre.....

Goosebumps the movie is a good option if they haven’t seen it

Whatthefunk · 28/10/2018 16:29

@hmmwhatatodo. I can't find anything... Maybe Scream?

Texas chainsaw massacreConfusedConfused howbout noooooo

DangerMouse17 · 28/10/2018 16:32

The films suggested for the 13yr olds would probably do it.

Goosebumps is pretty good fun, or perhaps something like Sleepy hollow?

Whatthefunk · 28/10/2018 16:36

Oh yes I forgot about Sleepy Hollow.

Texas chainsaw massacre I would think a bit too scary.

What about The Others ? Or Goosebumps ? The Sixth sense?

I'm not great with horrors but managed these..

hmmwhatatodo · 28/10/2018 16:45

Actually, I used to love Beetlejuice when I was around that age but not sure if you can find it online. There’s ghostbusters but it’s not really scary. I’ll look up sleepy hollow and The Others. I think Sixth Sense might not be a good idea. As for Texas Chainsaw Massacre?!

Squishies · 28/10/2018 17:00

Ghostbusters
Beetlejuice
The Witches
The Gremlins
Edward Scissorhands
A Nightmare before Christmas
Frankenweenie

user1981287 · 28/10/2018 17:19

Gremlins is a 15

ZanyMobster · 28/10/2018 17:27

Sixth Sense is fine for a 12 yo IMO, nothing much in it and a good starter if they are interested in scary films, The Others also. Gremlins is an old 15, l absolutely fine for a 12 yo.

ZanyMobster · 28/10/2018 17:28

I havent seen the other thread but not sure there will be much difference between what a 12 or 13 YO could watch.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 28/10/2018 17:31

Gremlins is a 15 cert?!

Well there goes my suggestion then.

Tattandthis · 28/10/2018 17:42

I was kidding HmmGrin

Squishies · 28/10/2018 18:33

Gremlins has been reclassified as a 12 according to BBFC.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 28/10/2018 18:47

Ds was the same so watched I Am Legend at that age. He really enjoyed it and watched it again recently.
He found woman in black quite scary at 13.

memememum · 28/10/2018 19:07

I remember Gremlins coming out and being gutted I couldn't see it as not 15. I got a cassette tape with picture book of it for Christmas! It was brill! Interested to hear it has been reclassified, I have previously thought films with a lower certificate now are much worse and of course there was no 12 cert at that time.

user1981287 · 28/10/2018 19:08

I am legend is definitely a 15

ILiveInSalemsLot · 28/10/2018 19:17

a lot of people on common sense media reviews think I Am Legend is ok for 12+ which is why I let ds see it. I knew he’d be ok with it but you know your child best.
