Photography books for beginners

Looking for some budding photographers to lend me their advice please! DP is getting into photography, bought himself a nice new camera & has asked for some books for Christmas. There are hundreds! I wondered if anybody has come across a book that they have found invaluable?

No. It’s all pretty basic. I wouldn’t bother when th a book actually. If can’t ubderstand how to operate a camera with the use of the manual and a quick google (if he doesn’t understand what the various functions, the digital equivalent of film speed, ss etc. Do) then a book won’t help him. I would book him into a workshop if he can’t opperate his camera or get him some coffee table books if he can. F64 is a great place to start if is ignorant about photography. If he has a general level of knowledge then consider formalist photographers.

Tony Northrup is always mentioned as a great photography book author. It's nice to have something to flick through instead of relying on web pages etc.

Also, there will probably be a 'For Dummies' guide available for his specific camera which is another great shout.

He much prefers books to having to look at a screen. I didn't think to look for a dummies guide to, thank you

Rather than a book, what about having a look at photography workshops or short courses at your local college or adult education centre?

I have debated that but he is suffering atm with anxiety so a class wouldn't be a good idea sadly
