If you never used to like gin, have you found one or more that you do like?

I love gin and so do most of my friends. We have several fantastic gin bars in our town but one friend really dislikes it. She is however prepared to 'give it a go'. I think a lot of people who don't like gin probably don't like overly quinine flavoured tonic, so even just trying a 'normal' gin with e.g. fever tree regular tonic or one of the flavoured tonics might do the trick. I know someone else who only likes Brockmans.
So, if you have found one you like when you never used to like gin, which one(s)?

I had it in cocktails to start with.

The first gin I drank as a G&T was the pink Gordon’s. I had it with Schweppes as DH told me that his dad used to say “if you’re not sure on tonic, try Schweppes. If you like that, you’ll be fine. If not, you don’t like tonic”!

It turns out that I do like tonic (of any kind) but that was a nice easy “in” if you know what I mean.

The first time I ordered a G&T out, I had Opihr with ginger ale. I knew I liked ginger ale, so it seemed a good way to try it.

I think you’re right in saying that the right mixer will help your friend discover whether she can enjoy gin or not :)

Gordon’s pink gin & lemonade not tonic

ScarlettDarling · 28/10/2018 08:49

Hi always thought I hated gin but you're right, turns out I hated tonic! As Stephisaur said, above, once I discovered I was allowed to mix gin with ginger ale, it was like a whole new world opening to me!

I think gin and tonic tastes like perfume but have recently been introduced to Edinburgh Raspberry gin which is gorgeous with lemonade. Also try their pomegranate and rose gin with rose lemonade - possibly more difficult if you're out but a winner if you're at home!
Possibly outed myself here 😬😂

A few starter suggestions:

Ophir spiced gin and ginger ale
A London dry e.g. sipsmiths with a proper cloudy lemonade
Try the pink hibiscus tonic from Schweppes from their 'posh range' with something floral e.g. bloom

Rhubarb and ginger gin liqueur with lemon fever tree tonic. Very sweet and doesn't taste bitter like gin. Few raspberry's in the glass with ice.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 28/10/2018 08:57

Thank you all. We're going to take her to a gin bar and keep buying guns/combinations til we find one she likes. We'll help her with the ones she doesn't to avoid wastage!!

BakedBeans47 · 28/10/2018 09:01

I like Tanqueray with fever tree Mediterranean tonic

Cleanermaidcook · 28/10/2018 09:04

Rhubarb and ginger with ginger beer 😊

sniffysnifferson · 28/10/2018 09:05

Gin and lemonade! I found It's the tonic...gin is lovely!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 28/10/2018 09:26

I hate Gordon’s, not gin, as I discovered last year.

I like a lot of the flavoured gins, and am happy to drink them with tonic or lemondade.

Cyclewidow46 · 28/10/2018 09:27

Whitley's Elderflower gin with Fevertree Mediterranean tonic is lovely

zolaaa · 28/10/2018 09:33

Threatening her with a gun until she finds one she likes is a bit harsh! Grin

I like gin, hate tonic. With ginger ale or lemonade it’s lovely!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 28/10/2018 09:37

@zolaaa ha just noticed the typo. But actually that might be an option!!

I like Hendricks, Garnish Island, Pink Rives and Larios 12. I hate pink Gordons, it tastes chemical like cheap sweets. I use Fevertree light tonic as it doesn’t taste too tonic-y.

EggsRoyale · 28/10/2018 09:40

Think I started out on Gin with cranberry juice or with bitter lemon?

TeddyIsaHe · 28/10/2018 09:40

Bathtub gin with elderflower tonic. It’s so smooth, I love it. Especially good in an extra dry martini with olives.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 28/10/2018 09:40

Agree I thought I hated gin but it’s the tonic! Love pink gin and lemonade.

meepmoop · 28/10/2018 09:41

I quite like the flavoured tonics. Fevertree do an aromatic one which is really lovely

I don't like Gordon's tend to drink Tarquins Gin, not sure if you get everywhere though

Squeakyheart · 28/10/2018 09:42

I was converted by rhubarb and ginger gin with ginger ale! Had a lovely evening drinking it however as a warning the result of that evening is now three weeks old! So DH won't let me near it again!

WineCheeseSleep · 28/10/2018 09:45

I've disliked gin all my life until this summer when I was served Hendricks and tonic with slices of cucumber. Loved it so much I bought a bottle for the house and am totally converted now!

drquin · 28/10/2018 09:46

I think these days saying you don't like "gin" is a bit like saying you don't like "wine".

Yeah, ok there'll be a few who genuinely like NONE ...... but there's such a variety of gins, coupled with such a variety of tonics & other mixers that it's difficult not to like at least one combination.

Depends on your friend's tastes .... I'm quite liking the Tanqueray Ranjpur (lime) at the moment. There's a Seville (orange) version too, so both more of a tangy taste. Or Eden Mill's chilli ginger. Conversely, I'm not mad about the more floral, blossomy flavours.

If you haven't already found it, download the Ginventory app!

OpposableThumbs2 · 28/10/2018 09:51

Definitely just the tonic I don't like.

PixieMiss · 28/10/2018 10:20

I did a gin tasting and tasted 6 or 8 gins on their own and still didn't find one I liked!

I find the spices (is that the right word?) that make the gin very harsh.
