There are very strict rules in NYC about sub letting or short letting property. so there are no legal Airbnb type places. this is why it is so expensive. I would repost this on long haul holidays and see what answers you get there. also try search on NYC in the holidays section and see what comes up. don't take a short let in the centre of NYC there are lots of scams.

Brooklyn! Get an apartment close to a metro station for much less money. I had a lovely Airbnb in Ditmas Park last month. £1300 7 nights, three double bedrooms.

mayhew · 27/10/2018 23:51

There are some legal Airbnb. Mine was. And very professionally managed.

First time we went to NYC, we stayed in Queens. Great hotel - super cheap! Only 2 subway stops from 5th Avenue, so as close to the big sites (if not closer) as many areas of Manhattan.

The yha hostel in Manhattan is cheapish and clean if you book a dorm room for the whole family.

Etino · 28/10/2018 00:03

This hotel is fantastic between Times Square and Central Park.
Showing $1000 now for a big room with 2 double beds in April, but I’ve got it for half that shopping around. Have you booked flights yet, best deals are as a package via last minute or Expedia

AviatorShades · 28/10/2018 00:21

The yha in Manhattan has already been mentioned, I was going to recommend that,OP. Friends with similar aged children rented there a couple of years ago. Worth checking out Smile

Wherever you stay do a thorough check for bed bugs before taking your luggage in!

Long Island City in Queens. Quick subway journey into Midtown and about half the price of Manhattan. Plus you get a view of Manhattan!

alfiesmam · 28/10/2018 07:37

Thanks - there’s some really cheap hotels there but most just have 2 double beds ?? I’ve got 3 kids who are too big to all fit in one double bed ,, rooms look small so not sure where they’d fit a sofa bed / pull out

Pod 51 was a great base for us. Small rooms but perfectly comfortable and the communal areas were great.

Was about £120 per night if I recall?

FogCutter · 28/10/2018 07:45

Sorry, it was Pod 39 hotel we stayed at (not 51!)

alfiesmam · 28/10/2018 08:01

@fogcutter thanks ! All the Pods are booked out for my dates :)

We stayed in New Jersey. It was a 15 minute bus ride into Manhattan. It really was an easy journey and saved us loads and loads of money.

Hilton Garden Inn Secaucus.

However, we only have two kids and were able to get one room with 2 queen beds.

I was looking at rental apartments before we plumped for this. That might be a better way for you to go, OP. I think I was looking for apartments in TripAdvisor.
