What do I want from New York then?

DD and her boyfriend are going to New York this week. She's just asked me if there's anything I want whilst she's there.

I'm not big on material things, so I can't think if there's anything I really want or need. What do people buy when they're there?

I know she wants to get me something and I sound really miserable saying 'nothing', but in reality, I just don't know!

Christmas stuff from Crate and Barrel or Pottery Barn!

hmmwhatatodo · 27/10/2018 15:03

A Christmas decoration.

MaureenMLove · 27/10/2018 16:27

Ah, that's a nice idea, but Christmas is not on my radar this year, for reasons we don't need to go in to, but thanks for the ideas. . Guess, I'll have to wait and see what she buys.

She's worried about leaving me on my own, so I hope I don't waste too much of her time thinking. I really want her to just have a fab time and forget everything and I don't like her spending her money on my anyway.

Not drip feeding, just don't feel the need to share my inner most problems with the Internet! I'm OK and not going to jump off a bridge!

Some beauty products are cheaper over there, or if you cook what about some herbs from Dean & Deluca or a cookie cutter?

Surely something that says I heart NY is practially obligatory, or a small yellow cab!

MaureenMLove · 27/10/2018 16:39

Ah, a cookie cutter, Now that's more my style. Good call. I might just like one of those bags from Macy's? The one that says, Little Brown Bag or something like that? Am I thinking of the right place? A bag for life anyway. I think that's what I want.

Just tell her that there’s nothing you want or need - but what would make you happy are regular updates on what they’re up to and pictures of the places they’re visiting.

SassitudeandSparkle · 27/10/2018 16:44

There ya go, a yellow cab cookie cutter and the job is done!

I've got some Macys bags that have lasted years, they used to give them out free when you spent a certain amount but that was years ago. If they still do it, you might be able to get the details from the Times Square visitors centre (it's a good place to go anyway).

Hope your DD likes the Big Apple

faeriequeen · 27/10/2018 16:49

Bath and body works products, especially handwashes and candles.

SassitudeandSparkle · 27/10/2018 17:24

Good call by faeriequeen there, I should have thought of that myself considered my DH had to bring back a fair proportion of B&BW's warm vanilla sugar range on his last visit!

Peppermint Bark! White and dark chocolate blended with peppermint oil and topped with crushed peppermint rock. The best brand is made by Sonoma Williams. and is sold in the major department stores, in gift tins, and in individual bars. It is only sold from Sept-Dec. A tasty American tradition.

Caramel m&ms bought from somewhere other than the M&M shop.
They. Are. Amazing.

SciFiScream · 27/10/2018 17:54

A bookmark of a landmark or a pressed penny. One is useful, the other doesn't cost much and can be made into jewellery.

Ask her to send you a postcard.

FaithInfinity · 27/10/2018 17:54

I went recently. I didn’t find things much cheaper to be honest when you added on tax. I went for a Tiffany necklace, Hard Rock Cafe t-shirt and Levi’s (I couldn’t get over here).

BruegelTheElder · 27/10/2018 18:00

I can't think of anything I'd want from NYC that I couldn't get here anyway. Except from certain foods I suppose, but I doubt she's going to want to bring you back a pizza.

AngeloMysterioso · 27/10/2018 18:03

Some lovely 3 wick candles from Bath and Body Works. They weigh a tonne though!

mycatplotsdeath · 27/10/2018 18:05

A snow globe... totally tacky but so fabulous

CathKidneyston · 27/10/2018 18:11

Ooh Sees Candies! The best and biggest chocolates ever.

zucchinicourgette · 27/10/2018 18:21

The brown bags are from Bloomingdales, not macy’s.
