Is there a way to stop junk mail?

Is there a way to stop junk mail coming to your door?
Full disclosure - am excitedly awaiting an arrival from EBay - but today all I got was four leaflets from different companies, which will end up straight in the bin. My question is slightly prompted by my disappointment BUT, how do we discourage all this waste being created??

That looks like the unaddressed stuff that is delivered by the Post Office. It is very very hard to stop because you have to ask your delivery office in writing to stop it and if there is more than one last name in the house, people with different last names both have to do that. And I think you have to renew your request annually or else it starts again.

Then it relies on your post person remembering that you don't want it and not posting it to you.

I got ours stopped for a while, but it's started again. Everything just goes straight in the recycling with barely a glance. So wasteful.

Thanks for your replies. You’d think in the digital age and with so much attention on waste and the environment, companies would do less of this...

I post the stuff from Royal Mail back in the post box.
