When do I hand my notice in?

So I have been offered a job today dependent on satisfactory references. So do I hand my notice in now or after the references have been deemed satisfactory? If I do it after then my employer will already know I am leaving as they will have to give a reference. I feel this is something I should know but I just dont.

I'd ask current employers for references ASAP. It's polite and they can have some notice to do what they need to on time.
Just tell them you've applied for a job and can they give you a reference please. This is what I've always done. Good luck with the new job!

Oh and work out the leaving date together with new and old employees. Get your new job start dates etc confirmed before you walk out and say goodbyes.

When you get your job offer sent to you then hand notice in . If they want to check refs first just wait until that's done but make sure you have your job offer .

Ive got my job offer letter. The new employers are keen for me to start asap and if possible negotiate my notice period down with my current employer so I think I should hand my notice in asap but then im worried about my reference from my current employer as I have had quite a lot of time off work sick probably 8 weeks in total over 5 years. 4 weeks of that in one chunk when diagnosed with depression. Will that be enough for them to withdraw the offer?! Im so scared of ending up with no job!
