Luxury hotels near Gretna Green

DP and I are eloping in January. We want to stay in a luxury hotel near Gretna for a few nights, but we don't know the region so it's proving hard to know where to stay. This is basically going to be our honeymoon so we do want somewhere really nice - price no object. Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

How close to Gretna? Stobo Castle for luxury spa? Or something smaller, more boutique? Haven’t been to Stobo though so can’t recommend!

No offence but Gretna is not a fancy part of the world. It's a flat, dull village only famous cos it was the first place over the border.

How about going a bit further and looking around Moffat or Peebles? Much likelier to find somewhere naice IMO.

Have a look at Cringletie House near Peebles.

Does it have to be Gretna for an elopement? You can get married pretty much anywhere in Scotland, it doesn't need a wedding venue license. You could hire a nice suite in the hotel of your choice and ask a Humanist celebrant to officiate. (This is a legal wedding in Scotland.)

I've never stayed but sometimes have meetings at this hotel and it looks lovely

But yes - you can go anywhere in Scotland. Some lovely places in Dumfries and Galloway.

Peebles or Stobo is still a good 2 hours drive on roads that might be a bit iffy if the weather turns in January. Glasgow is only an hours drive so would have more options for proper luxury I think.

I booked one of my colleagues into Smiths at Gretna, he said it was really nice!

Does it definitely have to be Gretna though OP?

SleepySofa · 24/10/2018 16:27

It doesn't have to be really really close - maybe within an hours drive.

It kind of does have to be Gretna for us. I know it doesn't really, but we're going to be pissing off quite a lot of people by eloping and if we think it might ameliorate it somewhat if we make a thing out of it being at Gretna. If that makes sense! In fact we need witnesses too.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

I am a bit worried about the weather, I must admit. I don't want to put it off until the summer though. We've been engaged for almost four years and have been so indecisive about the kind of wedding we want. My immediate family is all dead aside from my Dad and fit complicated reasons, I don't particularly want him there but don't want him to feel left out either. Finally DP said, let's just go to Gretna... it's our engagement anniversary in January and we thought it would be nice to do it in the same day.

Gretna sounds like a great plan given your circumstances. Gretna is just off the m6/m74 which should be okay in the bad weather, so driving anywhere on those should be fine. Is there anything in the carlisle area?

SleepySofa · 24/10/2018 17:55

Everything I've found around Carlisle has looked quite basic! Or at least not quite luxurious as I'm hoping for. I must be missing something though.

Very near Gretna is a super luxurious holiday let at Netherby Hall

The same people own Pentonbridge Inn which has equally luxurious rooms and the best food I have ever had outside of London
