Is this a weird weather thing ?

I haven't been able to buy any for a couple of weeks. Am i just unlucky or has something happened ?

Very important question .

We've had plenty locally here (Lincolnshire). Lidl, Morrisons etc. All fine.

Frozen sprouts seem to have gone missing 3 weeks ago though. Confused

Alexandra2018 · 23/10/2018 10:32

Try another store the Asda near me never has them anymore but there's a Morrison's 10 mins away that always does

Howlongtillbedtime · 23/10/2018 10:38

How weird . Both Tesco and Sainsbury here haven't had them for weeks.

Glad to hear it's not a thing though.

It has become a staple here. Only a few years ago I wouldn't have know what to do with one Grin

There's a shortage here too! (Rural Northern Ireland) there's normally loads but we went away a couple of weeks ago and haven't seen any since we came back

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 23/10/2018 10:47

We had plenty in Asda when I got sone a few days ago. Is it because of wholesaler problems do you think or because they're getting more popular so more are being bought and selling out?

Howlongtillbedtime · 23/10/2018 10:53

South east England here.

I don't think it's a supply thing . I should ask them I guess next time I go.

I have done an online order this week and they were unavailable there as well.

They are mostly grown outside the uk and I think most of the potatoes are displeased with the B word

Howlongtillbedtime · 23/10/2018 12:03

Another reason to be pissed off at Boris !!

There’s been a shortage due to weather conditions in the US.

BrookCreek · 23/10/2018 12:16

I only ever used to buy them for Christmas dinner (have American family) but since they have become fashionable I've noticed they are in shops all year round.
It's only in the last three years that sweet potatoes have been grown in the UK.
They will mostly be imported though, and I try to buy locally grown veg.

InterstellarScreamingElla · 23/10/2018 12:20

I bought some in Aldi yesterday.

dingdongdigeridoo · 23/10/2018 12:27

I bought some last week but they were much smaller than usual. Assumed it was a poor crop due to the weather.

SnuggyBuggy · 23/10/2018 12:29

I hope not, DD is weaning soon and everyone recommends them

umpteennamechanges · 23/10/2018 12:40

We're in the South East and haven't had any issues...DH would be lost without them!

BarbaraofSevillle · 23/10/2018 13:22

Could it be demand outstripping supply. They're 'everywhere' now and you can even buy frozen sweet potato wedges and chips and in times of shortage, eg due to very dry summer, the likes of McCain get the pick of the crop because they presumably pay more than supermarkets who just want to sell raw sweet potatoes.

Ariela · 23/10/2018 16:01

I'd assume a poor crop due to the dry weather. We've just started harvesting our main crop potatoes (late this year - still had some flowering in September!) and there's been very poor growth.

Jakethecob · 23/10/2018 16:18

Bought them at Tesco at the weekend

CurlsLDN · 23/10/2018 16:47

Had them in our Tesco today.

Snuggly butternut or parsnip would do just as well for similar texture and sweetness. Or make the most of all the interesting squashes available in Lidl etc at the mo, cut it into fingers and put it in the freezer until she's ready!

CocoDeMoll · 23/10/2018 16:49

Sorry it’s my fault. My 6m old ds has eaten them all.

lulumcgish · 23/10/2018 16:53

Maybe we have hunted them to extinction?
Hooray Halloween Grin

theliverpoolone · 23/10/2018 17:22

The ones in our Sainsbury's at the minute are the shape of carrots!

Howlongtillbedtime · 23/10/2018 20:15

I am sad that you lot have them and I don't :(

None in our Aldi earlier this afternoon, just a big gap on the shelf.

AdoraBell · 23/10/2018 20:27

I’ve got them, sorry. DD1 has gone vegan and said she wants sweet potatoes, so I bought them. She hasn’t bloody well eaten though Hmm
