Veggie chilli - oregano substitute

QueenOfIce · 22/10/2018 17:07

I have everything but the 2 tablespoons of oregano. Should I omit it entirely or substitute it? Would thyme work or mixed herbs?

Mixed herbs will do the job.

LoniceraJaponica · 22/10/2018 17:23

Two tablespoons!

That is a lot of oregano. Are you making it in bulk? Mixed herbs or marjoram will be fine, or just omit it. None of my chilli recipes have oregano in them anyway.

Oregano in chilli seems a bit weird? Surely you’d use spices rather than herbs

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 22/10/2018 17:29

I use a bit of oregano in chilli but not 2 tbs unless making a huge vat of it! I might use a little basil instead but I'd have thought it would be fine without any herbs. Key thing is spices. I use cumin and chilli.

SilentBob · 22/10/2018 17:48

I never use oregano in chilli either. Bolognese, yes. Chilli, nope. It'll be grand without it!

SilentBob · 22/10/2018 17:49

@TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap I'm all about the cumin in chilli- I use loads! (And chilli powder and paprika and cayenne. But mostly cumin)

HeronLanyon · 22/10/2018 17:50

Yes thyme. But put less in or it will taste slightly ‘medicinal’

redsummershoes · 22/10/2018 17:55

mixed herb will be fine.
or majoram

FellSwoop · 22/10/2018 17:56

Cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric?

Cherries101 · 22/10/2018 18:01

You can substitute it with a bit of lemon juice or anything citrusy.

redsummershoes · 22/10/2018 18:02

never coriander in chilli. eurgh.

paprika, smoked paprika, cumin, oregano (or majoram or herbs de provence) and of course chilli.

QueenOfIce · 22/10/2018 18:23

I used thyme I'm making enough for 10 hence the massive amount!
