My old Lenovo ideapad is on its last legs so I bought a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. (£75 2nd hand eBay, works great, very whizzy, battery holds a charge),
BUT
On the Lenovo, if I download a Word Document, it appears in the Downloads list. Then I can highlight it by moving the cursor over the document title. If I right click, a list of options appears, the top one is Open, in bold. If I click on this, hey presto, the document appears & I can edit it at will. Further down this list there is 'open with.....'
I never need to use this option, because the top 'open' option works just fine.
Not so with the Toshiba Satellite.
The only open option is open with.
I have to download an app to open my documents.
Why? WHY?
I haven't found one which allows me to open & edit yet, so I'm struggling with the dodgy Lenovo, which is like a comfortable pair of slippers, but very slow & temperamental.
Can anyone help?
Can I switch something off somewhere to allow me to just open a Word document without all the faffing?
Can anyone explain to an old duffer why this is so?

You need to tell windows 10 what to do with the Word file:

Have you actually got Microsoft Word installed on your Toshiba?

susiella · 22/10/2018 17:01

MissConductUS I'll give that a go in a bit.
Will it allow me to open Word Docs like I do on the Lenovo (clueless)
singleWhiteMale no, but I haven't got on the Lenovo, either.......

What software opens up on the Lenovo that allows you to edit the Word file?

singleWhiteMale · 22/10/2018 17:16

You need to have software installed on your Toshiba that can open and edit Word files. There are a number of free options available but this is one of the better ones: www.wps.com/

MissConductUS How do I find out what software opens up & allows me to edit etc? Presumably I could then put that on the Toshiba.
singleWhiteMale I wil try & download that one.
I'd really like the Toshiba to behave like the Lenovo does tho.....
Am I asking why a dog doesn't behave like a cat......................?

Am I asking why a dog doesn't behave like a cat......................?

No, since presumably they are both running Windows 10. It's more like you taught the old dog how to do certain tricks and now need to do the same for the new one.

To get the details of the software, open a document with it, then click on the help menu, then "about".
