Doctor Who tonight! One of the best episodes I have ever seen! Did you see it?

If you didn't see it, PLEASE get it on catch-up on BBC iplayer. It was about Rosa Parks, the activist in the civil rights movement in the 20th century (I'm sure you all knew that!) It was one of the most moving, well-written, brilliant episodes of anything I have ever seen.

So well acted, well written, and very educational. Brilliant, brilliant brilliant. Well done to all involved! Including Vinette Robinson who played Rosa.

Do watch it if you can. Excellent piece of television! I am soooooo loving Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who!

padded it out with names or people you would recognise from northern soaps or other northerners with Bradley Walsh as the token southerner.

I know, how wierd is it to have more than one Northerner on screen at once?

I mean, one every now and then is Ok, provided they posh up their accent a bit and only play poor people. Political correctness gone mad- they'll be letting them present the news next.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 22/10/2018 19:31

Oh thats why it was ok when it was tennent and barrowman neither of them used their northern (i know both scottish) accents ah i see 😂

MnerXX · 22/10/2018 19:32

donquixote I think they just hired the best people for the job Grin I really like hearing their accents. I live in the south now and find their voices comforting somehow!

Hiho I might give it a try then. He loves Star Wars, Harry Potter etc

FWIW I thought this was one of the truely great episodes of DW.

The complaints about too preachy, too slow, too obvious, too nice, not enough plot are all valid, but.....

After Moffat's approach of too much everything crammed in, they have clearly decided to slow down and give the characters and ideas room to breathe. I can wait for the other stuff.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/10/2018 19:41

donquixote I think they just hired the best people for the job

Don't be silly, what's the chance of 3 talented northern actors in the same generation?

Oh thats why it was ok when it was tennent and barrowman neither of them used their northern (i know both scottish) accents ah i see

Of course. Fine if they know their place, but let them hear too many Northern voices on TV and next they'll start asking why all the government funding goes to London and why the news ignores Northern issues.

They've got Corrie, that should suffice.

MnerXX · 22/10/2018 19:48

The Northerner infiltration programme is nearly complete...! It could be a whole new dr who story line...

legolammb · 22/10/2018 20:22

Hijacking a little, but could I point everyone impressed with the Rosa Parks story towards a wonderful man named Paul Stephenson who led a brilliant campaign in the UK on the buses. It was great to see such a big response to the Rosa Parks episode, but we often forget about our own black history

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 22/10/2018 20:26

The Northerner infiltration programme is nearly complete...

I think its been fairly complete for a while pretty much the whole NnWHO
Showrunners
Russell T davis from Swansea NORTH WALES (lived manchester) NORTHERNER
Stephen Moffatt scottisb NORTHERNER
Chris Chibnall merseyside NORTHENER

doctors
war doctor john hurt NORTHERNER
Chris Ecclestone NORTHERNER
David Tennent SCOTTISH
Matt Smith (nortjhampton) shhh
Peter Capaldi SCOTTISH
Jodie Whittiker NORTHERNER

Notable companions
amy pond Karen gillan scottish
John Barroeman Scottish (he was born in scotland)
Arthur Darvil brummy so sort of north

The master
John Simm NORTJERNER
Michelle Gomez Scottish

As you can see the cast up until this season has been completely southern actors who have never been north of the watford gap or been in anything else and are complete unknowns

And its only this season thats padded with northerner and previously known people in the major role Hmm

donquixotedelamancha · 22/10/2018 20:39

Arthur Darvil brummy so sort of north

This, coupled with the fact that a dozen major contributions from Non-southerners can be described as a complete takeover compared to other programs illustrates the level of the problem.

WhirlwindHugs · 22/10/2018 20:40

Thanks lego what a brilliant man!

Orchiddingme · 22/10/2018 20:46

My 13 year old loved it, the story felt really fresh to her.

I found it over-acted with lots of rushing about and declaring lines, also the baddy was hilariously not-bad unless having a quiff was a crime.

WhirlwindHugs · 22/10/2018 20:46

Paul was discussed in the fabulous BBC hidden black history series iirc?

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 22/10/2018 20:54

donquixote what is the quota of southerners that shoukd be in bbc programes

donquixotedelamancha · 22/10/2018 21:09

donquixote what is the quota of southerners that shoukd be in bbc programes

The fact that needs asking indicates the answer is: more.

Similarly it is not healthy how many of our cabinet ministers go to private school or how few women CEOs there are.

Don't confuse pointing out these structural problems for some kind of woke leftism insisting on quotas and mandatory positive discrimination; but if you don't believe the UK needs more equality of opportunity you are daft.

BestIsWest · 22/10/2018 21:27

Just to point out
Russell T davis from Swansea NORTH WALES

SWANSEA is in SOUTH Wales not North.

However, you do have a very valid point in that he has a strong connection with Manchester.

BestIsWest · 22/10/2018 21:37

I thought it was brilliant. Love her. Love Bradley Walsh and the other two are growing on me.

Have watched it since I was 5 and am 55 now. Though I didn’t care much for Sylvester McCoy, Colin Baker and some of the Matt Smith episodes.

Oliversmumsarmy · 23/10/2018 01:28

I was trying to point out that in previous series there was a predominance of new actors whilst this seemed to be full of ex cast members of Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, other soap operas and Broadchurch.

Like they auditioned people decided to go with who they knew instead

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 23/10/2018 03:10

oliversmummy but there wasn't, you seem to have been watching an entirely different series to every one else.

Tje only new actors out of 14 series have been matt smith, and pearl mackie.

People like john barrowman, john simm, michelle gomez, billie piper, noel clarke, and karen gillan were modrately to very very well established, john barriwman and john simm had been around for years and years , jenna coleman started in emmerdale.

You also seemed to taje against that jodie and show runner chris chibnall had just worked together on broadchurch you do know why david tennent got the job dont you? You are actally aware he didnt audition, he'd just worked with Russell T davis on the very successful and ratings winner Casonova arent you.

I see you say your family are big doctor who fans, however you seem pretty clueless about what the show us about or any of the actors careers

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 23/10/2018 03:13

Oh best so sorry i for some reason got it confused with wrexham, i think i was thinking cheshire, manchester it wouldnt be that far to move from north wales and wrexham. My geography failed me which is ironic thank you for correcting me. I actally mean that

penisbeakers · 23/10/2018 04:22

I thought it was absolutely fantastic.

Roystonv · 23/10/2018 04:49

Have not watched for years but wanted to 'support' a woman Dr. So disappointed, just meh. Yes it passes the time but that's about it. Will give it a bit longer.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 23/10/2018 07:39

Yessssssss oliver what a lot of unknown actors they've had in such major roles and what a lot of southerners they all are yes

Anything else you want to claim?

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 23/10/2018 07:43

Pretty much the only unknown in a major role oliversmummy is matt smith ironically the only southern doctor too

Maybe thats it youve simply watched matt and not noticed anyone else on the screen

Amummyatlast · 23/10/2018 07:51

I found it really boring and DH commented that it was like a badly done version of Timeless. The poor acting (except for the woman playing Rosa Parks) didn’t help.

Elderflower14 · 23/10/2018 07:54

How ironic we have had a somewhat modern version of Rosa Parks recently when that poor lady was moved from her seat on the Ryanair flight. 😔 😔 😔
I enjoyed last night's episode. The other historical ones I enjoyed were the French one with DT and the Charles Dickens episode.
