Doctor Who tonight! One of the best episodes I have ever seen! Did you see it?

If you didn't see it, PLEASE get it on catch-up on BBC iplayer. It was about Rosa Parks, the activist in the civil rights movement in the 20th century (I'm sure you all knew that!) It was one of the most moving, well-written, brilliant episodes of anything I have ever seen.

So well acted, well written, and very educational. Brilliant, brilliant brilliant. Well done to all involved! Including Vinette Robinson who played Rosa.

Do watch it if you can. Excellent piece of television! I am soooooo loving Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who!

No. The wasp was an alien that was killing people in the way they do in agatha christies books

MrsJayy · 21/10/2018 21:41

Ah of course but still therewas a proper villan/creature tonight we just had a potential love interest for the Doctor

Valasca · 21/10/2018 21:42

Hated it. The writing has taken an absolute dive.

I loved it. Every series has always had a couple of slower-paced eps in it. I'm loving JW.

Idontmeanto · 21/10/2018 21:45

I turned off last week’s after ten minutes as I was bored. Glad this one is worth giving another try. I’ve adored Dr Who since childhood and I want to love Jodie Whittaker. Sunday night doesn’t work easily for me, though!

Aquilla · 21/10/2018 21:51

I think it's time Dr Who was confiscated from the BBC.

rslsys · 21/10/2018 22:01

I think it's time Dr Who was confiscated from the BBC.

Dr Who does Bakeoff?

Chamomile · 21/10/2018 22:13

I thought it was dreary, poorly directed, overly preachy and just dull. I am well aware of the Rosa Parks story, and if the BBC wanted to do a docu-drama type thing I would watch it , but it's not what I want from Dr Who. I felt I was in a year 5 lesson and resisting the urge to flick rubber pellets at my friends. The Rosa Parks actor had far more screen presence than Jodie , sadly. I was just bored.

Gilead · 22/10/2018 00:48

Shame chamomile, for the many people experiencing hate crime in their lives, these things need to be pointed out all over again.

Oliversmumsarmy · 22/10/2018 01:05

Complete Dr Who fans. I don’t think we have missed a new episode ever when it was on Saturday.

Since it’s return we have tried to get into it.

Either the writing and script has changed or because Jodie Whittaker seems to be doing a bad impression of Matt Smiths version of the Dr or a bit of both but today was the first time we didn’t bother and I don’t think we will again.

Maybe when there is a new Dr.

From what has been said it appears to have become a version of Blue Peter. Made out to be a fun programme but more facts than school.

AornisHades · 22/10/2018 01:07

My 12 year old who knew it was about Rosa Parks very quickly, paused it to ask me what "that word was?". It was negro. Yes the episode felt a bit clunky but it highlighted how different her world is.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/10/2018 02:14

It wasn't my favourite, as an adult. But I think it was probably a bloody good episode to have been watching with children.

ChaoticKate · 22/10/2018 06:19

Nope. This series is terrible. Jodie Whittaker could be amazing but poor writing and an unengaging ‘gang’ have really let her down. Dr Who is one of my favourite shows, I’ve watched every episode many times but after the last three I’m on the verge of giving up.

GertrudeCB · 22/10/2018 06:24

It was brilliant. I had tears in my eyes.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 22/10/2018 06:42

I thought the scene behind the bins was a bit forced and clunky. It felt like it had been shoe-horned in to make a point that could have been made differently.

Other than that it I loved it.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 22/10/2018 06:47

We - me DH, DS and DD - loved it and I had a definite lump in my throat at the end. I didn’t like Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi although I love PC as Malcolm Tucker. I found those series were more about needing to know various DW backstories which I found confusing Grin This series seems more standalone and I think JW is great. It’s essentially a kids programme that a whole family can enjoy - surely the fact they’re in a Tardis travelling through time makes it sci-fi enough?

WhirlwindHugs · 22/10/2018 06:49

I agree that it was brilliant (in the same class as some of the other standalone fantastic ones)

The thing that they did exceptionally well is to not take ant credit for what Rosa did. The doctor didn't give any inspirational speeches or deliberately highlight how awful things were. Things were just awful by themselves and Rosa did what Rosa had already planned to do.

Excellent, subtle writing. I though the clunkyness between Ryan and Graham was much improved as well.

Time travel is sci-fi, that's a ridiculous complaint.

I do think this iteration is scripted to be a lot more kid friendly them Moffat, and maybe that's annoying if you are an adult but it was always supposed to be a family show. It is going back to what it is supposed to be.

WhirlwindHugs · 22/10/2018 06:54

It was a bit like the flipside of Van Gogh in a way. Where they interfere loads to inspire him to keep going and not kill himself, but he dies at the same point anyway. Except this time they're not interfering (except to keep things the same) and she does her brave thing regardless.

Ohh, and re: the tone, the ratings were going down massively for Doctor who. They have to try something else to get fans back/new fans or it will get cancelled.

rosy71 · 22/10/2018 06:55

We thought it was great, in fact we've loved all 3 episodes so far. I found the complicated story arcs Steven Moffat wrote very difficult to follow and much preferred the stand alone episodes then. It is a family show so needs to be easy for children to follow. Ds2 did not pick up his tablet once during last night's episode so it must have been good!

ChipInTheSugar · 22/10/2018 06:59

Perhaps the timing of this episode was to fit in with Black History Month??

Upsy1981 · 22/10/2018 07:25

I like stand alone eps too. I thought last night's was brilliant. Love the historical ones, Van Gogh and Pompeii being two of my favourites. I do like JW as I feel she is more of a Matt Smith doctor and he is my favourite. I couldn't stand Peter Capaldi as the Doctor and hardly watched any of his episodes.

ShotsFired · 22/10/2018 07:30

I have to say I am pretty underwhelmed.

It just seems to be a story arc of "ey-up, look at me Northern wumman doing things in a Northern way" which seems like a waste of JW's talent. It feels like this could be any show on tv (if you ignore the tardis), and doesn't feel as Dr Who-y as previous series.

And I am not a fan of them rewriting history to suit teatime TV ratings either, so I thought the premise of this was a bit tacky. Certainly not moving or stirring.

GinIsIn · 22/10/2018 07:30

Rosa parks was brilliantly played but the writing is awful. That bit at the end where she lectured them then showed them the comet was dire!

It felt like a poor rehash of Vincent.

Also, I have yet to see the point of Yaz.

Volant · 22/10/2018 07:39

Very disappointed Dr Who is a Sci Fi programme not a history programme

But that's never been the case. If you're going to have a time traveller as your protagonist, it's inevitable that that will involve going into historical events every so often.

CountFosco · 22/10/2018 07:42

My DDs loved it. One already knew about Rosa Parks, the other didn't. It's a kids show that has always had historical episodes (and in NuWho it's always episode 3 for new companions, first episode at home, second on another world, third in the World's past). Having a black and asian companion made it really come alive for the DC as well. Really good and written by the wonderful Malorie Blackman as well.
