What did you not have growing up?

That 'everybody else in the world!' had? For me it was a tamagotchi. My mum was afraid of it waking me up at night because she heard you couldn't switch them off. I desperately wanted a 101 dalmatians one. I have a lump in my throat thinking about it now! It felt so lonely to be the only one in the playground without one. I even looped a Christmas cracker keyring over my finger and held it in my hand so I could pretend to myself I was like the others. Blush

What about you guys?

A dad
A car as my mum couldn't drive
Holidays - I remember being really embarrassed going back to school after the summer holidays as we never went anywhere, I occasionally would make something up!

Light-hearted:

Mr frosty - obvs

One of those ball things with a round plastic bit around it that you were supposed to stand and bounce on. Called a pogo hopper I think? (Quite glad of this as I probably would have ended up with a broken bone or two! Looks lethal!)

Kickers school shoes. Or pods. - They both had a bit of a block heel which I thought was so cool & grown up. I used to sometimes find a stone in the playground I could stand on to see what having a heel on your shoe felt like!

Desperately wanted Adidas tracksuit bottoms for games at school instead of the unbranded two stripes I had to wear!

Ditto unbranded trainers - I was so desperate for some nikes or something that I 'borrowed' some that had been in the lost property box for ages. They were a size too small. And had been on someone else's sweaty feet. But God it felt good to be the same as everyone else!

Ribena

Coco pops

McDonald's happy meal - another here who just had to have chips and a burger even though I wanted the plastic tat.

Ham (I think?!) that was shaped like a teddy bear. Pointless really as you can't tell it's a teddy once between two slices of bread.

A computer

Pop tarts

SausageBrain · 23/10/2018 04:56

And play doh. My mum always said we weren't allowed it because it got stuck in the carpet!

AamdC · 23/10/2018 09:02

My kids were nevet allowed play doh for the same reason Sausage , we did get it once and it did get atuck in the carpets never agaim !

Pony & riding lessons (We were on a farm - there was an empty stable right opposite the house.)
Hornby 00 gauge railway. (Apparently we didn't have room. It could have gone in my sister's room. We could have managed without her.)
Burgundy quilted coat with a fur trim round the hood. I was literally (or so it seemed) the only girl in school without one, c.1981.

I managed without the swimming pool, because we weren't far from the sea.

I never wanted horrid hard plastic Barbie, so I didn't miss her. My sister wanted a Barbie, though, and had to make do with second-hand Sindy.

MadMum101 · 23/10/2018 10:37

Oh holidays for me too.

I was soooo jealous of a neighbour in my school year who had an annual holiday in Tenerife in the October half term, she'd come back all brown and bring me a pencil or something.

Our first family holiday was a Christmas in Disneyland Florida when I was 17, only I wasn't allowed to go Sad. Guess where I took DD as soon as she was old enough (6)!

Mummaluelae · 23/10/2018 12:38

Any clothing by Nike or Adidas!
My mum bought me fila (before it was big) and bloody kappa. I was mortified!
Then when I saved up to buy an Adidas tracksuit at about 13, being a teenager you leave clothes on floor, went to school, came back and my room had been painted but drips on my tracksuit that neither myself or mum picked up beforehand! Vex wasnt even close!

SushiMonster · 23/10/2018 12:38

Mr Frosty

One of those red and yellow plastic sit-in cars

SushiMonster · 23/10/2018 12:40

I also didn't have Kappa popper tracky bs... then mum did get me some. And I broke my leg and the ambulance cut them off me. I was so upset :-(

Mum did get me a replacement pair, and also a second hand sega which she had resolutely refused but felt sorry for me due to broken leg.

TV, phone, central heating (ice on the inside of the windows!), hot water, mains drainage, mains gas supply, holidays, washing machine, hoover, car, public transport, library, streetlights, pavements, shops. Rural life with no money 50 years ago. I have no illusions about living in the country. Moved to London as soon as I left home and have never, ever wanted to move back! Even spending half a day there gives me the jitters and makes me feel trapped.

Dowser · 23/10/2018 13:02

I did have holidays twice a year,
two parents that loved me,
A good childhood
Nice clothes...mum could sew
Good education,
A chilly house..one coal fire then gas fire was not enough
An electric hot water bottle 👍
A lovely extended family
Good friends
Plenty of good food
Great times and great memories

Tinty · 23/10/2018 13:03

Bloody hell, it seems reading this thread that there were only 3 Mr Frosty's sold in the whole of the uk Grin.

Anyway

A Mr Frosty
Rollerblades
Barbies
Cabbage patch doll
Care bear

Apparently I was too old for toys once I reached the grand old age of 10. Hmm Sad I had to make do with my best friends, cast off, strap to your shoes roller skates and share her toys (she was a great friend). Smile

KiplingAngelCake · 23/10/2018 13:12

Cabbage Patch Doll
Speak and Spell (spelling game toy)
