Wedding Hymn Suggestions

We are getting married in a few weeks and still haven't decided on our hymns!
We would like 3, we have decided on Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace to be sung by the full choir during the signing of the register.

I've always liked morning has broken but it is a late afternoon wedding in autumn so not sure it goes, same with all things bright and beautiful.
Autumn Days and One More Step Along The World I Go are nice but DP thinks it's a bit primary school assembly.

Possibly Amazing Grace and Lord Of The Dance?

I just don't know!
I'd appreciate any ideas!

I had all things bright and beautiful as we used to sing it at school all The time. Apparently not conventional but I didn’t care. Have songs you like rather than dreary hymns.

FaithInfinity · 21/10/2018 10:19

How great thou art always goes down well, most people know it, it’s a lovely tune.

shamofamockery · 21/10/2018 10:34

If your guests are all church goers, the lesser known hymns will be fine - if not (like me!) the "primary school" hymns are so nice to hear and sing again, and make you feel less of an idiot in the congregation if you don't know the words, you will probably know the tune!

Lord of the Dance is an Easter-related hymn, I thought?

Pick well-known ones or you risk having very few people actually singing. We went to one wedding where, I kid you not, I was the only person singing one of the hymns. I hadn't been asked to do a solo Grin so felt I had to keep it down somewhat. It was very odd and a bit uncomfortable. Having the choir singing along with the congregation should mean you avoid the no one singing scenario.

sola82 · 21/10/2018 10:42

I can't remember what hymns I had, although we had to choose off a list the priest gave us.

How about Lord of all hopefulness, or give me joy in my heart?

ChaoticKate · 21/10/2018 10:56

Jerusalem!

MamaJune · 21/10/2018 11:41

We have a real mix of guests going and a massive church so we have paid for a full choir so even if not every one sings hopefully we will fill the church with song either way Grin I know lord of the dance is eastery but it's good fun and I like it Blush some great suggestions - thank you!!!

We had a December wedding so had christmas carols instead, and it was great because everyone knew the words and wanted to sing along.
I wouldn't rule out school type hymns for that reason - everyone will know them and join in.

redexpat · 21/10/2018 11:55

Everyone knows Jerusalem.
Love divine all loves excelling.
I think one nore step along the world I go is very fitting for a wedding.
All things bright and beautiful.
At the name of Jesus.

Screamqueenz · 21/10/2018 11:57

Lots of suggestions here

Screamqueenz · 21/10/2018 11:57

I particularly like love divine all love excelling and the lords my shepherd.

vanitythynameisnotwoman · 21/10/2018 12:05

If you've got a choir rather than a band then
O for a thousand tongues/ And can it be/ When I survey/Amazing Grace/ How great thou art are lovely uplifting traditional choices. Presumably there's a good reason you are marrying in church, and these hymns are about God rather than about us, which would be my only criticism of Autumn Days/One more step along the world I go which only nod towards the vague existence of God rather than being hymns of praise.

If you wanted something more modern there's a Rutter arrangement of All things bright and beautiful that is gorgeous, and the Tomlin arrangements of Amazing Grace and Crown Him with many crowns are pretty well known at all but the most traditional of churches.

Fight the good fight,
Through the night of doubt and sorrrow

Toddlerteaplease · 21/10/2018 12:29

Love divine is about heavenly love not earthly love.

SnatchCatch · 21/10/2018 12:49

Bind us together Lord or Let there be love shared among us - both school type ones that are easy to sing but still work well for a wedding.

Thistles24 · 21/10/2018 12:54

Be thou my vision is my favourite, closely followed by how great thou art

TSSDNCOP · 21/10/2018 13:12

I like belters. We had Jerusalem and I Vow To Thee My Country.

Violetroselily · 21/10/2018 13:24

Be Still For the Presence of the Lord

bookworm14 · 21/10/2018 13:27

We had Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer and Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, both of which are fabulous tunes. Lord of all Hopefulness is beautiful too.

vicarlady · 21/10/2018 13:28

There are some wedding words to Morning has broken.

'Come to a wedding, come to a blessing....'

Notquiteagandt · 21/10/2018 13:37

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life
Is a good one. And the lyrics seem apt for a wedding.

Cleanermaidcook · 21/10/2018 14:09

We had Bind us together Lord.

CraftyGin · 21/10/2018 14:16

We had Will your anchor hold at my mum’s funeral. It was the first and last time I had ever sang it.

Guide me o thy great redeemer is good for weddings, with the last line of “I will ever give to thee”.

Be still for the presence of the Lord

Amazing Grace

The Lord’s my shepherd

I the Lord of Sea and Sky

Servant King

Praise my soul the king of heaven

Great is thy faithfulness

For the beauty of the Earth

Father God I wonder

2000lightyearsaway · 21/10/2018 14:23

Love divine

kayaking · 21/10/2018 14:25

Our wedding was at 2pm and we had Morning has broken, we felt it was the dawn of our marriage. That was more than 40 years ago.
