Passport application... Text messages?!

Just received this.

If you also received a similar text, how long afterwards did you receive your passports? I got the text at 12 this afternoon.

Myself and baby DS are going to Ireland on Wednesday but won't be going unless we receive our passports in time Yes, I know. No travel should be planned before getting passports!

I called the passport office on Thursday and they called back on Friday to say they were being auctioned straight away. They were a really lovely bunch over the phone :)

Just checked my texts from the summer, we got a text on the 28th (sat) and I have a text from their delivery service saying it was ‘due by tomorrow’ on the 31st.

forwhatyouare · 20/10/2018 13:48

So it must've been with you by the Tuesday then Shiv?

Thanks a bunch 🌽

I got mine within a couple days... You should get a delivery message saying it will be delivered within 24-48 hours... Mine came the next day. Then the dog chewed it after it came in the post Hmm

forwhatyouare · 20/10/2018 13:55

Frustrated Oh no! Did you manage to save the passport or was it too chewed?

Assuming you are a British citizen, you don’t need a passport to travel to Ireland.

FrustratedBeyond · 20/10/2018 13:57

The passport is dead Sad just paid £180 for 3 and now I need to pay for a replacement!! Bloody dog Angry

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 20/10/2018 14:03

I renewed mine in the summer. It took 8 days in total. Filled in the forms and posted the old passport on a Friday, got my new passport the following Friday. I seem to have deleted the text messages though, so can’t check how long after that one it arrived. They seemed very efficient.

forwhatyouare · 20/10/2018 14:13

Hain I'm somewhat rushed off my feet with a very active DS so my apologies for being dim, but I can't really make short and factual sense of that link.

I have a licence (British), I'm British and born here. But my DS wouldn't have anything ID wise with a photo on. He's only 1!

I never knew you could travel to Ireland (West coast), without a passport though!

I received that message on a Saturday and passports were delivered on Wednesday.

You need photo ID to travel so DC needs their own passport.

Jesterstolehisthornycrown1 · 20/10/2018 14:19

Op are you travelling with Ryanair? If so they will only accept passports even for uk/Ireland flights.

forwhatyouare · 20/10/2018 14:21

Yes, sadly travelling by Ryanair :( Awkward sods

We went to Ireland in the summer by ferry. We took our passports, but they were checked at all.

I’ve not done the trip by plane for years, so I can’t remember how that works. DS flew to Jersey on a school trip when he was 10 and didn’t need any ID. (I was sceptical when the school said he didn’t need his passport, but when I checked the easyJet T&C they were correct).

DeaflySilence · 20/10/2018 14:26

How urgent is your trip and where do you live?

Ferry to Belfast and then train to wherever your going. No passports needed, but depending on where you live and where your going, it could be a nuisance.

forwhatyouare · 20/10/2018 14:27

My mum and dad travel by ferry. They go from Holyhead.

I need to get to Knock Airport. As I'm going to Mayo. Belfast quite a way away I think

This website is good if you need a plan B and details how to get to Ireland by train/ferry:

Hain I've been on a thread recently about how people 'do' presents from Santa and this seems a very common thing

GunpowderGelatine · 21/10/2018 00:00

I recently got 2 renewed passports, the first one came 2 working days after that text (got text message on the Saturday it came the Tuesday) and the other came the very next day

Dani29c · 18/02/2022 09:18

I have one saying royal mail have your parcel from ? A company name not hmr passport office did yours say royal mail have your parcel from HMRC's passport office?

SnoozeAllDay · 18/02/2022 09:35

Do you know mobile phones have a screenshot function? So you don’t need another phone to take a photo of an actual phone?

Wombatsandstuff · 18/02/2022 09:39

Try and track your passport with tnt, you need the passport application number and your postcode. I did this after we had a damaged passport this week and it says when it’s going to be delivered on the tracking.
