Would you expect to pay?

Wondering what people think here- and whether you would expect to pay in these circumstances.

We are on holiday in DH's home country staying for 4 days in local hotel so not on top of DH's parents. We stay in the same little hotel every year and like it.

Last night we had a terrible experience though- woke up at 4am to find 2 men in our hotel room burgling us!! DH confronted them and they left. It all happened in less than 30 secs. And was a bit of a blur. We were groggy and didn't realise what was happening until they left! They had taken an empty handbag with nothing in it thank goodness and kids stayed asleep all night.

Needless to say, DH and I were freaked out. Stayed awake all night. He spent a couple of hrs down with reception- police were called- owner of hotel arrived- they checked cctv together etc.

DH thinks we should not have to pay a penny for our stay given this experience. I think we can expect some sort of discount but we have had the benefit of 4 nights stay and nothing was actually stolen so don't expect the hotel to do anything major for us other than apologise etc etc.

Wondering what others would expect in these circumstances. Thanks!

Well it's not the hotels fault presumably? Did other people get burgled or just you?

I would still expect to pay the hotel bill, but obviously the hotel should make sure it has satisfactory security measures/procedures and maybe it would be nice of them to offer you a free bottle of wine, flowers or meal as a nice gesture?

Pay or go to another hotel
It wasn't their fault, upsetting for all concerned though

I would probably expect a free night or something like a complimentary meal if they have a restaurant. Don’t think I’d expect for the full 4 nights bill to be free though

I agree - upsetting but we are already over it and nothing was taken. Doors of hotel open all night and single female on reception- no security- it's a small town. We think we were the only ones as they seem to have gone straight to our room. They will be re-assessing their procedures.

Glad the responses so far seem to be in line with my initial thoughts too! A gesture would be appreciated but wouldn't expect anything else really!
