It seems all the black contestants on x factor going through to the live shows have had their skin lightened in the photos.

The white people look lighter as well.

If you hadn't have pointed it out I would have just assumed it was lighting.

Hard to tell the stage lights and photography lights would look very different but I can see your point

It's lighting isn't it - they're all shiner / more reflective and most of the stage shots are in the dark

Probably a combination of more flattering lighting and the photo retoucher using their judgement on skin colour. Portrait Pro can work wonders on blemishes too.

The stage photos on the left in the article are all quite dark. Head down or at different angle etc. The photos on the right are studio photos, head up, bright light to make the photo look clearer etc. So yes they all look lighter due to the big light in their face but I don't think it's in an attempt to make their skin look lighter so we'll like them more
