Phrases you can't stand for no apparent reason

I know this comes up fairly often but I feel like we've not had one for a while...

My top ones at present:

Cutesy/cosy phrases used about adults e.g. (spotted on MN) "why were they in the garden at 2am anyway? Surely they'd be tucked up in bed and fast asleep."

Being 'helped to' re. food/drink. e.g. "she helped herself to the last of the champagne"

"tucking in" re. food.

Tabloid favourite here "tipping the scale at".

What makes your brain itch?

This is something I only ever see in trashy novels and magazines but when someone is walking barefoot its described as padding or padded. I hate it.

toxic44 · 19/10/2018 18:44

Up for grabs. I loathe that phrase; it is so greedy, no uncaring, so 'me-first.' Foodie, that's another, as in, 'I'm a foodie so I really know my way around the kitchen.'

areyoubeingserviced · 19/10/2018 18:45

My bad

'Any way shape or form' I can't stand it. Was a contributing factor to leaving my ex. I still cringe when I hear

Both of these aghhhh Angry

GinZing · 19/10/2018 18:51

My bad. MN towers used ‘our bad’ recently to apologise for deleting a thread! It’s everywhere.

theodorgeisel · 19/10/2018 19:04

Love this!

theodorgeisel · 19/10/2018 19:07

it's Monday! (in response to how are you)

It's Friday! (in response to how are you)

What's up? (after you've said hello on the phone)

I'm crazy/goofy/funny

What star sign are you?

Can you send a pic?

Can I send you a pic?

TeachesOfPeaches · 19/10/2018 19:11

Received a response to an email I sent, the answer to my question was 'working progress' Confused

TeachesOfPeaches · 19/10/2018 19:12

My 50 year old boss from the midlands says 'my bad' and 'get the skinny'. Makes me cringe every time.

PortiaCastis · 19/10/2018 19:15

And I mean this nicely
No you dont that's your excuse for being an arsehole

i get off the bus or I close the door
No you didn't that was hours ago so you mean got and closed

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 19/10/2018 19:22

Spill the tea. Huh?

teachergirl2011 · 19/10/2018 19:24

Starting a sentence with "im not going to lie"..... wtf?
Making memories
Date night
Open ended play?!?! Again wtf surely any child plays?
Mid morning snack
Putting it in their flight path
Young person? No they are a pupil or student
Boobing just makes me cringe I have this image of a child being whacked around the head with a huge breast!

PavlovaTescobar · 19/10/2018 19:24

Lots to choose from:
"Bad boys" as in let's tackle these bad boys here, the bad boys in question being something like doughnuts/quiz questions/a random artefact.
"I''d rather stick rusty pins in my eyes/ pull my eyes out/ eat vomit" than do something fairly innocuous. No you wouldn't.
"Let's do this". Hate this phrase.
"Slaw" instead of coleslaw.
PJs instead of pyjamas - this has already been mentioned and I totally agree.
"Mac and cheese". No, it's macaroni with cheese.
Loathe loathe loathe the word "gifting". "Giving" is a good word, or "Giving a present to someone" is equally acceptable. Tesco even have a gifting aisle. What on earth is the world coming to?

neveradullmoment99 · 19/10/2018 19:25

Penned an email pisses me off greatly. No you fucking sent it. Not penned it.

YouGotRedOnYou · 19/10/2018 19:26

I do like this.

Phrases you can't stand for no apparent reason
cheeseismydownfall · 19/10/2018 19:28

"Changing his/her bum" instead of changing his/her nappy.

LOATHE it.

Hereitisnow · 19/10/2018 19:32

With all due respect...

MemoryOfSleep · 19/10/2018 19:32

Anytime go is used without the preposition (and determiner if applicable). For example:
I'm going town.
Do you need to go toilet?
I've got to go dentist.
Grrr.

Hereitisnow · 19/10/2018 19:33

I hate when a hurricane 'barrels along'. It never moves towards a place, it always, always, 'barrels along.'

Tobythecat · 19/10/2018 19:37

"Over the moon"
"End of or end of the story"
"Happy days" ( fuck off you silly twat)
"I turned around and said"
"Life is what you make of it"( well not if you have a fucking disability)
"It is what it is"

Tobythecat · 19/10/2018 19:38

Oh ive got a new one

"Hunker down" said by American people in relation to hurricanes

Sugarsnappy · 19/10/2018 19:40

Ducks in a row

I'm just calling this out

Member745520 · 19/10/2018 19:40

Lessons have been learned.

owlshooting · 19/10/2018 19:43

Going forward
So.. at the beginning of a sentence
Momentarily used in completely the wrong context : ( 'I will do that momentarily'.)
I also hate date night, and in fact, dating.
Can I get? (No , you may have it if you ask properly)
On trend

Flaunting her curves (i.e. fat and proud of it)

Totopoly · 19/10/2018 19:46

Oh God, yes, "calling him/her/it out". Fine if you're planning a 19th century duel. Otherwise, do one.
