Phrases you can't stand for no apparent reason

I know this comes up fairly often but I feel like we've not had one for a while...

My top ones at present:

Cutesy/cosy phrases used about adults e.g. (spotted on MN) "why were they in the garden at 2am anyway? Surely they'd be tucked up in bed and fast asleep."

Being 'helped to' re. food/drink. e.g. "she helped herself to the last of the champagne"

"tucking in" re. food.

Tabloid favourite here "tipping the scale at".

What makes your brain itch?

"Edgy" or "Fierce" - used to describe someone's style.
Also "rocking up" to somewhere
"I rocked up to Poundland to buy some toilet roll"
it's cooler than just going obviously.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 19/10/2018 08:38

Nom nom - can't stand it!

Nephrite · 19/10/2018 08:42

@gothefcktosleep "Fast forward to now" is used so much on mumsnet and I agree it's irritating

Consideredintrusion · 19/10/2018 08:43

'Just sayin'/saying' smugly at the end of some banal comment. I find it so bloody passive aggressive.

Mumberjack · 19/10/2018 08:51

@notonyournelly I have the perfect antidote near where I live, a cafe called Nourish that’s all about buttered toast and slabs of cake. Not a chia seed in sight Grin

Nephrite · 19/10/2018 09:09

I've always found "and the rest is history" deeply irritating.

Nephrite · 19/10/2018 09:10

Our eyes met across the room and the rest is history..

squishee · 19/10/2018 09:14

Amazing. Why does everything have to be ahmahzing? It's so overblown.

Generally any slang imported from the US.

Where I am in Germany, when someone says "Sorry to bother you" a grumpy reply can be "So don't!"

MargaretDribble · 19/10/2018 09:17

Nomnom
Scrummy
Myself/yourself as in 'I just thought I'd give yourself a ring' and 'My colleague and myself'.
To die for

WheelyWheelySpookilicousCotee · 19/10/2018 09:20

WheelyWheelySpookilicousCotee · 19/10/2018 09:23

I seem to be saying

Okedoke

a lot, I mean a lot 😁😁 that would irritate me if someone else did it

MadisonAvenue · 19/10/2018 09:27

Well jel
Flavoursome
Living my best life
Winning at life

Wine o’clock

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 19/10/2018 09:40

Jammies is more annoying than PJs imo

Gaslighting, ghosting, other made up terms like that really get my goat - just say "he lied to try and confuse me" or " he just wasn't that into me" ffs don't use made up stupid words Angry

Goals... natch.... terf... arrrg!!! Shut up!!! ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedAngryAngryAngry

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 19/10/2018 09:41

The phrase “spitting feathers” because everyone misuses it to mean angry. Its proper meaning is thirsty. Angry makes no sense.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 19/10/2018 09:43

I can hardly bear to write this - “My bad!”

sansouci · 19/10/2018 10:04

Awesome: "I'd like a coffee, please."
"Awesome!"

Working on this/that: used by server to diner. "Are you still working on that?" Drives me up the fucking wall!😡

"I'll get a slice of pepperoni and a coke."
Yes, you will because I'm going to throw them at you, you jackass!

Fucking hashtags everywhere. Just stop with hashtags!

Narrative. "His narrative is so on point."
Grrrrr!

Ottermum23 · 19/10/2018 10:28

Crimbo
Hun
"We have to catch up, soon"- when is no intention from either parties, and it's obvious

AmIthatbloodycold · 19/10/2018 10:29

God, yes jammies is so much worse than PJs. And everyone loves them. They don't just wear them, they "love my jammies, they're so comfy".

Anything related to preparing food, only ever seen on MN - or Jamie Oliver. Chuck, throw, bung. I'm imagining posters standing in kitchens that look like bomb sites with food everywhere. All while making their "huge salad" (never small or medium sized) or their "massive pot of chilli"

MrsGollach · 19/10/2018 10:30

"Reaching out" and text instead of texted.

ClinkyMonkey · 19/10/2018 10:30

Pan fried - as in pan fried salmon, steak or whatever. Can't imagine what else I'd fry the damn thing in. The food is fried. Mentioning the pan doesn't make it more 'gourmet'. You get charged extra for that word 'pan' thrown in there.

MrsGollach · 19/10/2018 10:32

Anything on point. Nobody seems to understand that it should be en point.

MrsGollach · 19/10/2018 10:32

...oh and "hugs" Grrrrrr

80sMum · 19/10/2018 10:33

Going Forward
At this moment in time
Touch base
Lovin' the....
You ok hun

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 19/10/2018 10:36

'Nip it in the bud' used to describe behaviour that has been going on for YEARS.

^ Yes. This one gives me enormous inner rage. Why don't people understand that you can't nip a bud that has fully blossomed, grown fruit scattered it's seeds?!

Ophelialovescats · 19/10/2018 10:39

Probably been stated before but needs another mention because it is so stupid
' At this moment in time'

Where else would a moment be?
