Tablet that plays audio books but nothing else...?

I am looking to get my 4 year old some wireless headphones and a device to play audiobooks as a Xmas present...ideally it would be a digital device however I don't want something with games/YouTube etc.

Is my only option to get a kindle fire type tablet and disable all the apps or does anyone know of a specific audiobook only device I could buy? Google is failing me!

The alternative is an iPod however I think he would need the icons of a tablet as he can't read yet, and it needs Bluetooth for the headphones as am paranoid about wires getting wrapped around little necks Blush tia

I have a Kindle Fire HD 7 for my daughter and I can control what things she has access to via the Parent Dashboard. So I can insist she does x mins on apps/books etc before anything else becomes available. I can also see what's been accessed so if something does slip through, I can spot it.

We pay £1.99/month for Kids Unlimited which gives age appropriate app and video content but it might have some bearing on the Parent Dashboard options, I'm not sure.

Either way, I think a Fire tablet would grow with your child a bit too, for when you do want them be able to play some educational games etc. We got ours for £45 as an approved Amazon used one on a discount weekend.

I've got a normal kindle (not a fire tablet) and i think i can play audio books on it (never tried though) - will try to investigate...

Actually maybe not, no headphone jack. As you were!

Thanks guys. Very helpful... You're right maybe a tablet will be more of a long term investment

Kindle fire is perfect for a little one, you have the audible app and books obviously, and you can add educational apps but take off anything like YouTube and browsers. They are very cheap and quite sturdy

I wouldn't advise headphones as it is very easy to damage hearing with them, especially as you can't set a low enough max volume on a tablet.

You can buy children's headphones that have a maximum volume

My ds has a bluetooth speaker for his room and I connect my iPod at bedtime and play audiobooks for him. I keep the iPod outside the room so he doesn't get distracted by the lights/tempted to play games. He loves to fall asleep to the story and no wires.

In the daytime he has a kindle fire with the kids' subscription. He likes the books on there and also has a few school apps like mathletics.

I was looking at children's headphones which have a limiter. And the Walkman isnt the wildest idea...I actually got him this off eBay last Xmas 😂
