Ice cream and the microwave!

Am I being OTT or am I right to think you don’t put a tub of ice cream in the freezer to make it soft, scoop some out, re-freeze it, put it back in the freezer for next time, put it back in the microwave to soften it and repeat the process until it’s all gone. Isn’t that a recipe for food poisoning?

I wouldn’t be happy with that. Did children eat it?

In my first sentence I meant you don’t put it in the microwave to make it soft...refreeze it, microwave it, refreeze it...microwave it...you get the gist!

I occasionally put some in the microwave to soften up, only for 5 or 10 seconds. I wouldn't think that it is warming it up sufficiently for germs.
Certainly hasn't done me any harm to date.

I used to do it all the time to soften it up a bit so I could scoop it out. Didn't cause any harm.

Now I only buy soft scoop ice cream so don't do it anymore.

If all you are doing is softening it then how is it different to sitting it out on the side to soften for a few minutes? If it's warm then thats completely different although I can't imagine it's being melted.

Meh. On low power for a few seconds, it's fine.
I have ice cream in my freezer which specifically says to soften for 10 minutes before scooping. It has the same net effect. And tastes much nicer if you let it soften slightly.

Fair enough then! Grin I just thought it would breed bacteria. My mother does it and gives to my 1 year old..but perhaps I need to relax!

Yep, 10 seconds to make it scoopable is fine. Tubs never last more than 2 servings in our house Blush
