100% attendance

Ds1 is 12 and in year 8. He also has autism.

His school has something called the 100 club for all children who have 100% attendance. They get to have a treat every half term and the treat gets bigger as the year goes on. So this half term they get an extra non uniform day and in the last half term they visit a theme park. The school make a big thing of this to encourage 100% attendance.

So ds gets all excited about it all while I try and dilute his enthusiasm before it inevitably ends in tears. Today he threw up so he is in quarantine and out of the club. He is devastated and keeps crying.

I hate these attendance awards. A certificate is fine but it feels wrong to reward children for being well. I'm happy for children who are truanting to be rewarded for improved attendance as that is a behavioural thing and improved behaviour should be acknowledged. But rewarding children for not being ill seems wrong and unfair.

Teacher for a long time and I detest the very concept. Mercifully not quite the same fervent drive for 100% attendance where I am. Schools down South seem very dictatorial. Poor lad

Could not agree more.

Are they rewarding the kids for being lucky and not getting ill?

Are they rewarding the kids for coming into school when ill and spreading their germs around?

One is blatantly unfair and the other is outright harmful.
