Do you always eat at the dining table?

DP and I eat breakfast (not always together) and lunch at the table but have dinner in front of the telly on trays Confused
But now that we have a DC about to start on solids I think I'd like to start having "dinner as a family" at The Table. Thoughts?

No.
Weekday breakfasts at the table.
Tea and supper often in front of the tv. We tend to eat at different times. And thanks to allergies and fussiness often different meals.

OvO · 16/10/2018 13:39

Dinner is always at the table.

When I was growing up dinner was only eaten at the table at Christmas. We weren’t allowed to use the table at all any other time in case it got scratched.

I desperately wanted us all to eat at the table every night as that’s what I’d see on tv shows/films. I just loved the idea of sitting chatting rather than scoffing while watching Neighbours and Home & Away.

So now I’m the grown up we have a cheap Ikea table that it doesn’t matter if it gets scratched and we eat there every night. And it just as lovely as I’d imagined it’d be.

PinkHeart5914 · 16/10/2018 13:41

Yes always!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner plus I sit the dc at the table if they have a snack as it stops mess being all round the house as they are quite small still so can be messy.

I also think having a meal as a family, all sitting together whenever you can even if it’s just once a week is important.

DelurkingAJ · 16/10/2018 13:44

Meals with DC at the table. Just us is usually on the sofa.

MaMisled · 16/10/2018 13:46

Always at table and at a time we're all together. If DD is on a late shift and we've eaten, we'll sit with a coffee while she eats, to hear about her day. When DS and DD went to university they both organised house mates chipping in for cheap second hand table and chairs as they agree on the importance!

Hushnownobodycares · 16/10/2018 14:03

No.

Sunday lunches in particular with both DP's routinely behaving appallingly put me off for life. Christmas aside, I've never subjected the DC to them.

OvO, we clearly had polar opposite experiences as kids Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/10/2018 14:05

The children always eat at the kitchen table, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dh and I will eat on our Laps on a weekend night if we’re watching something. We only use our actual dining table for if we have people over for a meal, or for Christmas. I think the last time we used it it was to play beer pong.

Meet0nTheIedge · 16/10/2018 14:06

A mixture here, mainly at the table or patio table but sometimes in the front room if we all want to watch something together that's on at a mealtime (eg Strictly) as we don't have TV in the kitchen. Not always at the same time though, we are all in and out in the evenings (DCs are teens) and don't always eat lunch at the same time at weekends. Sometimes even if we are all around one person might go and sit at the table in the kitchen to read, the others sit out on the patio. We have lots of family chat at other times, in the car, evenings watching TV together etc, in fact we find it easier to chat away from the table for some reason.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 16/10/2018 14:09

No kids but I always eat at the table whilst DP eats downstairs in the lounge on the sofa in front of the TV. Sounds a bit sad put like that! But I can't eat properly not at a table.

tinytemper66 · 16/10/2018 14:17

Sadly no we got out of the habit of it with just the two of us. If we have visitors we do.

CruCru · 16/10/2018 14:19

We eat at the table. However this is because we have a sporadic problem with mice (terraced house in London) so it’s easier of crumbs don’t wander around the place.

Autumn101 · 16/10/2018 14:25

Kids always eat at the table and if we’re all eating together at table. If just DH and I after they’re in bed we eat on sofa

anniehm · 16/10/2018 14:27

Dinner at the table except for pizza when we put a cloth on the floor. So much easier from a cleaning point of you and better for talking, family time etc. Tv is banned during mealtimes except in exceptional circumstances. We sit at the table even when the (now grown) kids are out

Mightywease · 16/10/2018 14:36

Breakfast and lunch is in front of the TV. How otherwise we'll i see "Go-Jetters"!!

Dinner is at the table, except for the weekend when it'll be in front of the TV and also when DH and I tend to eat later. With wine!!

Tubbyinthehottub · 16/10/2018 14:36

Yes. I hate eating on a sofa, unless it's maybe just a biscuit and a cup of tea.

TheFifthKey · 16/10/2018 14:44

DC have breakfast on the sofa, everything else at the table 95% of the time - I hate eating main meals on the sofa except occasionally and I'll even sit at the table on my own if need be!

WooYa · 16/10/2018 14:50

We eat on the sofa in the living room but I'm getting a new one soon so we're getting a tiny table and chairs to put in the kitchen

TheMagicTorch · 16/10/2018 14:58

We tend to chill out in front of the sofa with our dinner during the week, but sit at the table on Friday, Saturday & Sunday nights.
When our little one (currently pregnant with our first) comes along and is weaning I want to progress to always at the table.

BitchQueen90 · 16/10/2018 15:00

I don't have a dining table because we live in a flat and don't have room.

We have a small breakfast table in the kitchen, we have dinner there but breakfast is on knees in front of telly as mornings are too much of a rush!

RiverTam · 16/10/2018 15:03

when I lived alone (and didn't have room for a table!) I ate on the sofa.

Since moving in with DH we always eat at the table. DD sometimes eats in front of the TV as a treat at the weekend.

we both grew up eating at the table.

serbska · 16/10/2018 15:06

Always at the table.

Who wants to be clearing up food debris from anywhere other than a kitchen or dining table?

AviatorShades · 16/10/2018 15:07

Ahh Ovo that's lovely Smile

I'm alone now, so choose to not have a TV, so something I really just don't want to miss live (like the Ryder Cup recently) the menu is set....pizza! In my study, in front of my laptop. With beer.
And if that sounds like the start of an Agatha Christie film, so be itGrin

Generally tho, I eat once a day, at the counter in the kitchen. Listening to The ArchersGrinGrinGrin

Sforsh49 · 16/10/2018 15:08

As adults with no kids nope, but growing up ALWAYS at the dining table as a family, Dad would make sure he was home for tea at 6pm from work. It's an enduring memory as a child. I often sit at the table to eat my lunch if I'm off and husband is at work. If we had kids we would sit as a family at the table, TV off, no negotiation.

MinaPaws · 16/10/2018 15:09

DC eat at breakfast bar on shcool days but otherwise at dining table for every meal except some weekend dinners when we have pizza or similar and eat watching a film.

Strokethefurrywall · 16/10/2018 15:09

Yes all meals are at the table except on Friday evenings which may or may not result in Pizza picnic whilst watching a family movie.

I grew up in a dinner at the table household and I still love it now.
Kids are 7&4 and often eat whilst watching a show on the ipad if DH or I are pottering or preparing our dinner later. But if we're eating a proper meal together, we all sit down at the table with no screens.
