What would you want to eat???

I have ‘ the girls’ coming round at the weekend for a meal and a drink.
I’m not a bad cook- I have done it professionally.
I have been through my books and picked what I thought was a really nice seasonal menu......but. ..............
I think it might be a bit ‘showey offey’ and I don’t want to not get invited to theirs because they feel intimidated.
So, if you were coming to my house for a piss up and a meal what would you want to eat? Drinks wise I’ve got most everything so all tastes / meals can be matched with drinks.

What’s on your show off menu? I expect I’d like to eat that!

Hideandgo · 15/10/2018 20:57

I’d happily eat absolutely anything you made an effort to prepare for me.

You know your friends. We have no clue whether they eat everything or only nachos.

PurpleDaisies · 15/10/2018 20:57

I think you’re overthinking not being invited out because your cooking is too good.

For a piss up I’d want lots of yummy stodgy food. Pizzas? Nachos with chilli and cheese? Sorry I’m not very sophisticated!

PurpleWithRed · 15/10/2018 20:58

Ooh yes go for something showoffey. I have a friend who is a brilliant cook, very happy to eat whatever he fancies creating, when he comes round here he’s happy to eat whatever I put on the table.

ThePrincipal · 15/10/2018 20:59

At the moment, I fancy a curry and rice.

AdaColeman · 15/10/2018 21:00

What's on your menu? I'm sure I'd love it, as long as it wasn't curry or chilli! Wine

greendale17 · 15/10/2018 21:01

A curry

gobbin · 15/10/2018 21:01

A friend of ours who is the most fantastic cook always does:
...two meat based dishes (curry, pulled meat, stroganoff etc etc)
...fancy bean or rice based salads, usually two different kinds
...fancy potato salad type thing
...something bread-y (usually just french stick)

More than enough for an evening buffet type affair.

peridito · 15/10/2018 21:04

Baked potatoes ,salad ,different cheeses .Lots of butter .

Cheesecake /fruit salad .

SodTheBloodyLotOfThem · 15/10/2018 21:04

I don't like shellfish, beetroot or dill, so smoked salmon dill terrine followed by crab and beetroot risotto is probably out. Other than that I don't care. And I'd invite you back but you're getting slow cooker curry with sides, or oven pizzas and salads.

Jeippinghmip · 15/10/2018 21:06

Roast chicken with all the trimmings.

JosellaPlayton · 15/10/2018 21:09

Mexican always goes down well with a piss up! Fajitas, home made guacamole and crudités, nachos... that sort of thing! Accompanied by yummy cocktails.

Peachypips · 15/10/2018 21:13

I'd want show-off food! What is it? Wouldn't feel intimidated, just glad I had a friend that can make delicious food!

ThePrincipal · 15/10/2018 21:13

Oh , how about a massive pan of paella type thing but with chicken. Delia does this chicken basque recipe thing in her summer book. Note to self - must make that soon.

HSMMaCM · 15/10/2018 21:14

I'd love a show offy meal, it I'd also be happy with pizza or lasagna.

yorkshireyummymummy · 15/10/2018 21:17

My original menu was
Grilled goats cheese on brioche with homemade chilli jam and onion marmalade.
Duck breast with an elderberry and blackberry sauce, fondant potato and an undecided veg.
Orange blossom and polenta cake with homemade almond ice cream and pomegranate syrup.

I really don’t want to do Mexican - I’m so past that.

How about a beef stroganoff or a goulash with spätzle or noodles? With garlic bread and green salad?

Your first menu sounds gorgeous to me!

PurpleDaisies · 15/10/2018 21:18

That doesn’t sound ott fancy. I’d do that (apart from me being veggie!)

Atalune · 15/10/2018 21:18

I’d be a bit miffed with jackets to be honest, or pizza or anything else quite so basic and stodgy.

I would like a tagine with jewelled cous cous and flat breads and another salad and some sides of humus, baba ganoush.

Or maybe roast topside of beef, with horse radish cream, pepper salad and nice bread with a beetroot slaw to make my own sandwich or salad

Salmon with roasted tomoatoes, chorizo served over quino and a big green salad.

Something like that would be just perfect for me. Not too showy offy but not too basic either.

Screamqueenz · 15/10/2018 21:19

I love duck, so your fancy menu would suit me, but I'd be amazed if your friends care what's on the menu, it's about time together.

MongerTruffle · 15/10/2018 21:20

Both of the menus sound great, although with the goulash or stroganoff I think just a good sourdough bread would be better than garlic bread.

yorkshireyummymummy · 15/10/2018 21:20

Purpledasies

I have had occasions where we haven’t been asked for dinner because people feel their cooking isn’t up to what they think I expect.
I’m a sucker for a lovely lasagne or cottage pie so dead easy to feed!

Your friend offers their time and Home and you’d be miffed af their choice of food? Lovely.

Atalune · 15/10/2018 21:21

Just saw your update.

Sounds yummy! The only thing I would say as it’s a courses menu it may feel quite formal? Something like that I would do for a mixed dinner party with couple but not for a group of female friends. I would want more family or buffet style.

You sound like a great cook, id be so glad you cooked for me Grin
