What would you want to eat???

I have ‘ the girls’ coming round at the weekend for a meal and a drink.
I’m not a bad cook- I have done it professionally.
I have been through my books and picked what I thought was a really nice seasonal menu......but. ..............
I think it might be a bit ‘showey offey’ and I don’t want to not get invited to theirs because they feel intimidated.
So, if you were coming to my house for a piss up and a meal what would you want to eat? Drinks wise I’ve got most everything so all tastes / meals can be matched with drinks.

I have had occasions where we haven’t been asked for dinner because people feel their cooking isn’t up to what they think I expect

Have they actually said that? It sounds a bit like an excuse to me.

Meet0nTheIedge · 15/10/2018 21:21

I'd love your starter and main but meat and fruit are an absolute no for me so I'd struggle with the main. I like beef stroganoff though.

Atalune · 15/10/2018 21:24

purple

The question was about the food on offer and yes if someone offered me that up I would eat it with a good grace and compliment them as I am not a barbarian. But in terms of a rave review when I got home, no. It’s nursery food. Not something I would enjoy too much.

If the question is about being grateful of the hospitality then of course I would be and very much enjoy the time with my friends.

2 separate issues.

It sounds Iovely OP but not OTT to be honest.

In simple terms it’s cheese on toast, meat and two veg and a nigella lawson (or similar) cake.

I’m sure it’ll be delicious but I think you’re over thinking it.

yorkshireyummymummy · 15/10/2018 21:28

purpledasies

I have just written a full post telling you how yes, I knew for certain that is what happened.
Then, as I was about to press send I realised that it’s none of your fucking business whatsoever and I have no intention of explaining myself to you, unlike your very clear intention to be nasty. So I deleted it.

You have said your piece now please- jog on.

Wow. That’s a serious overreaction to a pretty benign question. Confused

yorkshireyummymummy · 15/10/2018 21:32

Atalune

You’ve got it. Hit the nail on the head.
It’s the formal courses thing isn’t it - that’s why I’m feeling a bit 😮😳😳 about it. I knew something was wrong but didn’t know what.

I think I might do a stroganoff and keep the same desert but bin the starter.

Does that sound ok?

MunkeeBum · 15/10/2018 21:34

Wow. That escalated quickly.

yorkshireyummymummy · 15/10/2018 21:35

It wasn’t your question purpledasies. I answered your question.
It was your further probing of the answer I gave as you - for some unknown reason - wanted me to doubt myself and think that maybe we were not invited because people didn’t like me rather than the answer I gave.

Your menu sounds lovely and I would be thrilled if a friend cooked that for me. It I do tend to go a bit OTT because I enjoy spending a whole day in the kitchen.

My only concern with your menu is the juggling finishing main whilst eating starters. I'd want to leave my guests for as little time as possible. For that reason, I would drop the starter and do nibbly bits in the kitchen instead whilst having an aperitif finishing the duck. Nibbly bits could include the goats cheese and jam but bite sized instead.

Orangedaisy · 15/10/2018 21:35

I think a ‘girls’ pudding should involve chocolate. Stereotypical maybe but in my circle would be the best hit. How about a pile of chocolate brownies with home made ice cream? And maybe a fudge sauce too....

JosellaPlayton · 15/10/2018 21:35

Sounds utterly delicious, but given you’ve described the evening as a girls piss up and not a dinner party, it might make the evening a bit stiff/formal given it’s 3 courses round the dinner table. I’d go for the goulash idea instead or a lasagne if you’re a sucker for one, and serve it family style. It depends on what the done thing is in your friendship circle I suppose but generally speaking I think something more informal will be better given the vibe of the evening.

yorkshireyummymummy · 15/10/2018 21:36

Yes munkee it did didn’t it.
I only asked for ideas of food to serve, not to have my past picked apart by someone hoping to be nasty.
Some people eh!

yorkshireyummymummy · 15/10/2018 21:38

Hmmmmm...... chocolate.

I have a great brownie recipe and a divine but very light textured sticky toffee pudding. With sauce.
What other chocolate puddings do people like?
I tend to do lemon or almond puddings because that’s what I like!!

Atalune · 15/10/2018 21:39

op sounds really great! Enjoy!

MorelloKisses · 15/10/2018 21:40

I’m not sure PurpleDasies was meaning to imply you weren’t liked/popular, I do think you are over reacting.

I would also be surprised that someone would be so intimidated by cooking as to not invite you - but I’m sure it does happen - I would t imagine it would happen twice though.

PurpleDaisies · 15/10/2018 21:40

I honestly don’t know why you’ve decided I was being nasty. I just can’t imagine any genuine friend wouldn’t invite another around because they were too intimidated by cooking for them.

Anyway, you’ve made up your mind I’m a bitch. Home made buns are too show offy so if you’re going to keep throwing them, make sure they’re shop bought.

Orangedaisy · 15/10/2018 21:41

Tirimisu (only sort of chocolate I guess). Chocolate mousse. Chocolate cheesecake. Even just a good ice cream would be a hit for me. Or stick with your lemon/almond thing and make/buy truffles for second pudding.

biscuitmillionaire · 15/10/2018 21:41

I would love

any beautifully cooked fish, with a sauce, and new potatoes or potatoes another way, with a selection of veg

then chocolate mousse, or tarte au citron, or strawberry shortbread, or raspberry meringue, etc

simple, not leaving you feeling stuffed, but delicious

BonnieF · 15/10/2018 21:43

Your menu sounds amazing.

Can I come round? Grin

Taffeta · 15/10/2018 21:44

My ideal would be

Prosecco or champagne
Canapés

Seafood - a giant sharing platter
French fries
Salads
Albariño

Cheese and accoutrements
Chocolates
Malbec

MarthasGinYard · 15/10/2018 21:46

It does sound yum

But when it's just me and the girls I make a huge gorgeous lasagne with home made coleslaw and a salad so we can just serve ourselves and chat.

I tend to make a cheesecake or tiramisu ....cos it's easy Blush

Storm4star · 15/10/2018 21:48

OP, I have no advice but please can I come to your girls night because your food sounds amazing Grin

MarthasGinYard · 15/10/2018 21:48

Then 4 hours with Cheeseboard and Port

Athena51 · 15/10/2018 21:58

@yorkshireyummymummy

Your menu is my idea of absolute heaven, I would love it if someone cooked me something as nice as this.
