‘I just got my Sainsbury’s delivery and I meant to buy X number of things and accidentally bought X lbs of it’

Always laughed at people doing this on MN. What idiots! I thought.

Any ideas for using up 4lbs of onions? Blush

French onion soup!

Troels · 15/10/2018 18:33

French onion soup, make it in the slow cooker, I'll be over when it's ready.

Aprilislonggone · 15/10/2018 18:34

Quorn Hot Dogs and loads of onions.

AdaColeman · 15/10/2018 18:35

Also, onions keep for ages, or you could chop up and freeze them.

PurpleDaisies · 15/10/2018 18:36

Onion chutney.

redsummershoes · 15/10/2018 18:38

onions keep. 4 pounds is not that much.
if you want to you can chop and freeze in portions,

PrincessTwilightStoleMyToddler · 15/10/2018 18:39

Oh dear - I have done that before with both tomatoes and root ginger!

Homemade onion chutney would make a nice addition to any Christmas hampers you might be doing this year?

DollyWilde · 15/10/2018 18:47

Thank you for not being as cruel to me as I would have been Grin

Had forgotten I could freeze them as is! Will probably do some batches of sofrito. Suppose I’ll use them eventually... although a rainy Sunday making stacks of chutney does sound quite fun!

Onion Jam!

abbsisspartacus · 15/10/2018 18:50

Did this with bananas I ordered 8 turned out it was 8 bags and I swear they sent more than that either that or.my memory has enhanced my embarrassment although I did manage to compose myself to return them

DollyWilde · 15/10/2018 18:59

The ridiculous irony is that I need red onions for tonight’s tray bake and completely forgot them, so I’m currently trotting down to the shop to get yet more fecking onions 😂

DH told me to use the white ones in the tray bake but they don’t taste the same....

4lbs of onions is nae bother. Put them in a cotton bag in a dark cupboard and they'll last for months.

Ofchris · 15/10/2018 19:03

I’ve done it (twice) with bananas ordering 6 bags of six instead of six individual bananas. French onion soup sounds good.

SinkGirl · 15/10/2018 19:05

If you have a big freezer I’d chop loads and stick them in the freezer (makes life so much easier when you’re cooking), make some chutney and some soup.

NoTeaNoShadeNoPinkLemonade · 15/10/2018 19:10

onion bhagees!

Spankyoumuchly · 15/10/2018 19:41

I bought one sprout.Blush

Butternutissquashed · 15/10/2018 19:44

I’ll trade you for some of the 14 bags of bananas that we had delivered last Saturday. Meant to order 14 bananas. Let 10 year old add them to the basket. I didn’t realise until I’d unpacked!!!

RubyPreciousJewel · 15/10/2018 19:46

I did this op. Instead of 4 individual carrots I ordered 4 bags 😂

Ariela · 15/10/2018 20:14

Chop and freeze - if you spread out on a tray to freeze, when frozen you can then pop in a container and just scoop out what you need each time

Xiaoxiong · 16/10/2018 15:03

After posting on this thread yesterday, I got my waitrose shop this morning - of course the chickens are sold by unit not by weight so while I thought I put in 4kg of chicken, in fact I got 4 whole chickens. And they were the "extra large" ones too...

And then when I was telling a friend my woes, she said that a few years ago she ordered 4 boxes of cinnamon for holiday baking, and 40(!!!!) boxes turned up.

cantfindname · 16/10/2018 15:13

Daughter ordered a net of lemons. She got a box of lemons. Over 120 IIRC. We made lemon cakes, lemon pies, lemon mousse and lemon curd.

Got over this and blow me if she didn't get a huge net of carrots!

AviatorShades · 16/10/2018 15:23

Oh! I love these ordering disastersGrin
And going out to buy red onions when you're overwhelmed with ordinary cooking ones? Glorious!
Onion soup will take loads,OP do you have chicken stock(optional, but I once massively overbought Chicken Oxo cubes) but you'll need thyme for it. And you can freeze onion soup.
No, i'd not be phased by a surfeit of onions, but if you are...gotta bike,OP? Gotta striped jumper? Gotta gitane to put behind your ear?
Off you go then. On yer bike. Sell them in no timeGrin
Alternatively, strung, or hung in a net, somewhere cool, they'll last for ages.
But the bike option is best,I reckon.
Oh! and post us a picture, right?Grin

Fluffyears · 16/10/2018 16:52

Chop and freeze, you xandiokettaightfromfrozenwith them. Make some soup, bolognese, chilli etc which all need onions.

Fluffyears · 16/10/2018 16:52

Argh you can cook straight from frozen.
