When does “this afternoon” end?

Someone told me at noon today that they would ring me “this afternoon”.

I’m sitting here waiting for the call, not wanting to go out in case I don’t hear the phone (important call).

When does the afternoon finish?

5pm?

northlaine · 15/10/2018 16:14

5pm? Then it's early evening?! Seriously I don't know but can't you phone them back to chase it if you have things to do?

kaytee87 · 15/10/2018 16:16

I'd say 5pm because 6pm is definitely evening

happyrayoflight · 15/10/2018 16:16

I'd say 5pm but if it's a work thing then could possibly be 6pm. Can you call them ? I hate wasting my time waiting for people. I know it's pushy but it gives me the rage when they forget all about it.

smallfootpercy · 15/10/2018 16:17

I don’t know their number.

I can email them I suppose.

Thanks all. Hate waiting. Keep checking my phone in case I missed a call.

6pm, though between 5pm and 6pm could also be considered early evening.

NonaGrey · 15/10/2018 16:21

If it’s a work or business call I’d say 5:30pm, it it’s personal before 6pm.

EnidButton · 15/10/2018 16:34

Depends.
Most people 6pm.
GP 6.30-7
Office place 4.30-5.30
Shop 5.30
School 4.30

So I'd say 6pm max.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 15/10/2018 16:37

I always think afternoon turns to evening at 6pm

not sure why though Grin

CherryPavlova · 15/10/2018 16:39

I always took afternoon to end at the hour the use of a corkscrew became acceptable- 6pm.

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 15/10/2018 16:41

Between 4-5pm.

smallfootpercy · 15/10/2018 16:43

Still waiting Sad

Close of business I'd say, so between 5pm and 6pm.

smallfootpercy · 15/10/2018 16:55

And now of course I’m wondering whether my phone is working (no reason why it shouldn’t be) but daren’t ring anyone to check unless they try to ring whilst it’s engaged Confused

smallfootpercy · 15/10/2018 18:11

Does the sun not cross the yard arm at noon?

Oh shit!

Gazelda · 15/10/2018 18:35

The afternoon ends at tea time.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 15/10/2018 18:37

For me it's between 5 and 6pm.
I am in Italy and forever getting into bother because for an Italian it doesn't finish until about 8.

CutesyUserName · 15/10/2018 19:07

Up to 5pm.
