Fil had a stroke last week, it has affected his left side, we are obviously devasted and unsure what the future holds, he was physically fit prior to this, could anyone share their experiences please?

It really, really varies. I've known two people well who have made excellent recoveries. One was a young mother (30s) who was in a wheelchair unable to walk after her stroke, and made a near-full recovery. The other was left with minimal residual effects.

On the other hand we all know the picture can be worse than this for some, but at this point I think it's fair to hope that there will almost certainly be a good deal of improvement for FIL, however bad the picture seems now. Poor chap, it must have been a dreadful shock for him and the family.

thanks Apples, yes it's a massive shock for him and the whole family, just taking it a day at a time and hoping to support in any way possible. He is getting good support at the hospital, been on an exercise bike, supporting to attempt to walk and helping with exercises for his hand. He has a loving family.

A week is still very early days after a stroke. And recovery varies a lot! It's really hard to say what his recovery will be like. If he's getting physio, SALT (if needed), support then that will really aid his recovery.

Great to hear he's taking the physio seriously and has good support from you all! Hopefully he'll get much of the way back to normal, or even completely. Being fit beforehand definitely helps, if only by making the physio that much easier.

We've not had any strokes in the family but a couple of friends elderly DPs have had them and are both basically fine after a year or so, though weak on that side. One had to relearn how to speak, we were very worried but now you can't tell any difference.
