Anywhere nice to eat in... Watford?

Yes yes we're going to the Harry Potter thingy. Fancied grabbing lunch before, and possibly dinner after. We'll be getting off the train from Euston.

No pizza! Looking for sandwich type lunch, and possibly Chinese in the evening but open to all ideas. Any faves? DS eats most basic kid food, sigh.

Near Watford Junction station?
Nana's (Lebanese)
Nascot Arms (Thai)

There are loads of restaurants at the bottom of Watford High St but that's a bit of a walk from Watford Junction.

TheThirdOfHerName · 14/10/2018 21:56

Also Derwish (Turkish)

BikeRunSki · 14/10/2018 21:58

We were there today! We stayed in St Albans last night and ate at The Waffle House last night. It’s about 20 mins drive from the studios.

woodhill · 14/10/2018 21:59

Is Derwish opposite TK Max? It was very nice

Quite nice food places at top of high street too

BikeRunSki · 14/10/2018 21:59

Sorry, ignore me, i’ve Seen you are coming by train.

TheThirdOfHerName · 14/10/2018 21:59

I love the Waffle House! I think the OP is coming by public transport though.

TheThirdOfHerName · 14/10/2018 22:01

Yes, Derwish is near Nana's, opposite The Range & TK Max (Which is confusing as according to Google maps it looks much further up St Albans Rd. Maybe they have two branches?)

Notquiterichenough · 14/10/2018 22:03

Lot's of places in the centre, but it's a walk. Are you going back into London?

MissDai5y · 14/10/2018 22:03

They have a market on every day of the week that has loads of really nice independent food stalls with a wide range of different types of food.
Korean, Trinidadian, Indian and Guyanan is what I can recall but there is more. Great for lunch.

Hanako is a Japanese restaurant run by an old couple near the top end of town and I love it. Not open on Wednesdays and isn't open all day (closed between lunch and dinner)

Have fun

TheThirdOfHerName · 14/10/2018 22:20

MissDai5y is that the Japanese place up the metal stairs in the new market? I know it as Sushi No Mai and my friend knows it as Grandpa's. Smile

TheThirdOfHerName · 14/10/2018 22:22

I've just googled and I think there are two sushi restaurants at the top end of town, each run by a (different) elderly Japanese couple.

Are you just on public transport? If not, the nicest restaurants near Watford are...in St Albans!

The train station isn’t very close to anything, apart from Nana’s. Derwish is also quite close and is really nice and surprisingly cheap. The nicest sandwich place is the independent Ocean Bells, probably 10-15 min walk from the train station, in the centre of Watford. Viento coffee shop is quite close to the station and a proper coffee /sandwich shop but very small inside.

There are also lots of chains in the centre (Wagamamas, various Italian chains etc). Cafe Plus is slightly further north up St Albans Road and is Turkish/Greek feel; the road is a bit uninspiring but the food there is really nice and also good value. Agree with Thai food at the nice Nascot Arms pub, close to the station, or Lemon Grass is also Thai and close to the station. I haven’t found a good Chinese anywhere yet, sadly. Lots of good Indians if that takes your fancy?

Wigeon · 14/10/2018 22:36

(Derwish is indeed a bit further up St Albans Road and not next to Nana’s, and not quite opposite The Range/TK Maxx).

ronswansonstache · 14/10/2018 22:45

Tarboush Lebanese in the town centre (not far from the main shopping centre) is just fab and great value. The calamari is excellent!

They don't take card so bring cash.

MorrisZapp · 14/10/2018 23:08

Brilliant advice! Yes we're heading back to London. Does the Nascot Arms do pub grub too or just Thai? I'd love a Thai, not sure if DS so keen.

OP posts:
TheThirdOfHerName · 15/10/2018 15:02

It's a pub with a (separately run) Thai restaurant within it.

Wigeon · 15/10/2018 22:37

Pretty sure the Nascot Arms only does the Thai food, no mention of anything else on their website or the last time I went there (which was a while ago). Nascot Arms website

Flower Drum For Chinese

Shane you don’t want Italian as Zinco’s is lovely!

Lots of chain restaurants there - Nando’s, Bills, Waga...

Enjoy!

NoTeaNoShadeNoPinkLemonade · 15/10/2018 22:40

Flaming grill up Langley road 5 mins walk from Watford junction.
Beer steak + everything inbetween

gothefcktosleep · 15/10/2018 22:43

Oh, just read that the flower drum has closed! Strike that from my suggestions...

There’s a pret for sandwiches
