How many products do you put in with a wash?

PatPhelansRedVan · 14/10/2018 14:59

On a Facebook group someone asked if her 5 products she put a photo of was too much. Now others are saying they also put 5 or more different products in the machine.

Am I missing something,? Does EVERYONE do this? I just do a laundry capsule. Unless it's maybe heavily stained/special type of wash etc.

Until recently, I just used washing powder. But clothes never smelled clean. Now I use a Calgon tablet (very hard water area) soap powder, a capful of zoflora and fabric softener. Sometimes also some bio powder or a colour catcher. So up to five. Things are smelling a lot nicer now.

DaffydownClock · 14/10/2018 15:23

Half dose of washing powder + quarter amount of softener. Occasionally add Vanish if heavily stained, otherwise nothing more.
Manufacturers must be rubbing their hands together in gleeful! Unless the laundry is particularly filthy you don't need anywhere near what the manufacturer says in my experience (50 years of doing the washing!)

I use an Eco Egg (no power/liquid/anything with that) or I use 2 small scoops of ecover power (no fragrance). No softener or fragrances used (migraine is triggered by some of this stuff so I stick to no fragrance and the egg or ecover.) I am quite amazed at how much I have saved since changing from Persil/Lenor.

BiteyShark · 14/10/2018 15:24

I use washing powder and fabric conditioner for whites. A colour washing capsule and fabric conditioner for colours.

Very occasionally I will pre treat with stain remover if needed.

Never thought or needed to use anything more.

I use either liquid or powder and sometimes vanish or soda crystals - I run a hot wash in an empty drum with nothing about once a month. I read that the dettol ‘laundry cleanser’ does fuck all and softener makes things grimy so I’m not into it. I’m a bit obsessive about laundry so I divide colours from whites and do separate wool washes etc which I think contributes more than the extra laundry stuff would to keeping clothes nice. The unstoppables made my friend come out in a really nasty rash!

cloudtree · 14/10/2018 15:28

2/3 of the recommended dose of washing powder. Occasionally a bit of fabric softener if Im doing bedding but again only 2/3 of the recommended dose.

I might pretreat something like a grass stain.

Skyejuly · 14/10/2018 15:28

Just washing powder!

Cauliflowersqueeze · 14/10/2018 15:31

OP

Fairy liquid in a dishwasher causes a froth inferno which covers the kitchen. Haven’t dared try it in a washing machine. Confused

abbsisspartacus · 14/10/2018 15:32

Soda crystals as I'm in a hardware area eco ball and a bit of powder

PinguDance · 14/10/2018 15:32

I’d like to claim I’m minimising my washing products for the environment- I do use splosh liquid and those soap nut things as part of my laundry, but I’m also not shy about doing a hot wash so I’m not sure how it balances out. To a PP who said their clothes didn’t smell clean - i wonder if you always wash on 30? I find if you only ever wash on 30 your clothes will start to smell after a while so I often do a 40 wash and will bung whites in on 60 every now and again.

Theweasleytwins · 14/10/2018 15:32

I only use a laundry tablet/capsul

Occasionally I'll put in a capful of zoflora if I remember but that's not often

DollyWilde · 14/10/2018 15:32

Just Fairy non-bio gel. I’ve done a bit of experimenting over the years but whenever we switch from Fairy NB to another brand DH’s eczema flares up, so I’m loathe to mess with a tried and tested formula now (although it would be lovely to use softener I reckon)

RoboJesus · 14/10/2018 15:33

Vanish
Detol
Colour catcher
Detergent
(Softener on occasion, usually for blankets)

NoNoCharlieRascal · 14/10/2018 15:34

Washing powder. Jobs a goodun

SoyDora · 14/10/2018 15:34

Non bio washing powder. That’s it!

Cachailleacha · 14/10/2018 15:35

Washing powder, half what's recommended.

Hate the feel and smell of softener. If I buy clothes on eBay I have to rewash them to get rid of it.

StoorieHoose · 14/10/2018 15:38

Surely washing at 40 degrees is better for the environment than washing at 30 with all those extra chemicals?

I use washing liquid (never as much as they recommend) and softener if doing towels

AviatorShades · 14/10/2018 15:40

Cheapo Morries washing powder only. Live in a soft water area and god! dont i know it, when the tiniest spot of shampoo lathers up to monstrous proportions in the shower in the morning, and the clock's ticking...

Cachailleacha · 14/10/2018 15:40

Don't softeners make towels water repellent?

mikapatika · 14/10/2018 15:47

Bio washing powder

Use a tiny bit of fairy w/u liquid to pretreat toddler stains, seems to work so not sure why you’d buy loads of other things.

TrashPanda · 14/10/2018 15:47

I have several products but I don't use them all at the same time. I have persil colour liquid and persil whites powder, one used in each wash along with fabric conditioner. Stain pre-treat spray used mainly for baby clothes if poo or weaning mess. I also have stain powder and colour catchers which I only use occasionally if I've got quite a few messy baby clothes or a small mixed wash of stuff needed quickly.

oopslateagain · 14/10/2018 15:51

Washing liquid and softener. Plus a cheap Calgon knock-off as my machine leaves marks on clothes otherwise. If it's a mixed wash I'll pop a colour catcher in too.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 14/10/2018 16:00

Washing powder, occasionally a splash of zoflora.

simbobs · 14/10/2018 16:10

I always separate whites, colours and woollies and use liquid detergent appropriate to each type, together with fabric conditioner. Towels and tea towels are always washed separately as these never ever have fabric conditioner in the wash. It makes them waterproof and, therefore, useless.

BitchQueen90 · 14/10/2018 16:11

I use a washing capsule and some softener.
