I am applying for a job that requires knowledge of specific software packages. I know nothing about computing at all but want the job so badly I've got hold of the software and I'm training myself. I think it's do-able. Just Word/Excel etc.

So, would it help my case in interview to say I'm SO keen I specifically went out & trained myself to a good competency, or should I keep my mouth shut & just say I picked up the skills throughout my career? They don't ask for certificates.

I would talk about it in interview. You spin it to be a positive.

I’ve had interviews when I didnMt know the specifics and said I was quick to learn and gave examples.

I find specific packages referred to in job descriptions fine for internal candidates but not really appropriate for externals.
Good luck.
