Would you find this annoying?

I'm in a houseshare with a guy I'm friends with and I'm hating it already.

He whistles... All. Day. Long. From morning until night. Just constant tuneless, random, whistling.

He constantly drums... not with a drum kit but he aggressively drums any surface he comes into contact with with his hands. Even the toilet bowl... Just batters the fuck out of anything he passes as well as his legs. As well as beatboxing etc.

I keep asking him to calm it down but He doesn't understand why I'm annoyed and just mocks me, and says this is what normal people are like.

I admit I am oversensitive to noise and really try to keep my mouth shut as much as possible, but being on the autistic spectrum it can be a huge source of stress for me. He knew I had issues and yet he still nagged me to live with him again, I was actually looking to get a self contained flat or something. Bloody should have.

I can't leave just yet for various reasons.

But just so I could perhaps feel like I'm not the only one, would any of this piss you off?

I'm so quiet he says he doesn't even know I'm in the house...

I've also ordered a white noise machine, loads of earplugs and laid a thick carpet in my room... Hope they work.

:(

It would drive me crazy.

How long before you are in a position to move out?

AGHHHH · 13/10/2018 18:42

Another 9 months to go. :( I'm sat in bed with earplugs in but they're the twist and insert ones which I find a faff to do properly all the time so hate having them in.

Invest in a pair of ear defenders

Maelstrop · 13/10/2018 18:45

Get noise cancelling headphones and really insist that he stops. This would drive me bloody crazy.

Racecardriver · 13/10/2018 18:45

I would probably end up aggressively drumming on his head saying over and over "this is just what normal people do".

TruelyTruelyScrumptious · 13/10/2018 18:56

Does he have adhd?

AGHHHH · 16/10/2018 20:30

@TruelyTruelyScrumptious He's been checked and nope!

@Racecardriver I really want to!

Ugh I'm tired of having a constant headache. Just feel like screaming SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Also autistic. Just reading your OP made me stabby. There's someone at work that comes through once a week and whistles the whole time he's there, I have to leave the building.

Your friend is being a bit of a cock, mocking you when you ask him to stop. He wanted you to live there, why can't he make an effort to not be such an irritating person?

minniemummy0 · 17/10/2018 09:52

Not autistic, no known auditory issues, but I too would find that completely annoying, it would get on my last nerve. It is NOT what “normal” people do, whatever normal is! In a flat/houseshare he should be making compromises not mocking you for being annoyed.

SapphireSeptember · 17/10/2018 10:23

Wait till he's sleeping, pop your ear plugs in and then blast Rammstein out at top volume. When he complains say that's what 'normal' people do. But he really needs to knock it off. That would drive me crazy! Although I would then be passive aggressive and just have my headphones on and listen to music constantly and just ignore him.

serbska · 17/10/2018 11:30

Yeah hugely annoying.

I would spend as little time as possible in the same room as him.

Tinty · 17/10/2018 11:33

Now you know why his parents made him leave home Grin.

My little brother tapped things incessantly as a child, he doesn't do it now, it sounds like the guy hasn't grown up.

Can you put music on every time he is whistling? Preferably something he doesn't like.

NonaGrey · 17/10/2018 11:36

I’m not on the autistic spectrum and this would drive me up the wall.

It is assuredly not what “normal” people do.

AGHHHH · 17/10/2018 14:34

Thanks for the replies

I lost my temper and shouted for him to stop and he just laughed. Hmm

I've ordered ear defenders as well as my earplugs but I don't think I should have to live my life wearing them because he can't stop. Well he can, he managed not make a single noise for several hours at the library...
