What do I need to watch amazon prime on my tv?

I have a fairly bog-standard tv. It has digital channels but isn’t smart.
I have amazon prime and currently watch things on my iPad but I’d like to watch films on the tv. Do I just need a fire stick? Is there any advantage to having the fancy remote? Or is there another way to magically beam them from my iPad to the tv? Grin

I just use a fire stick but let DH do all
The boring setting it up stuff. I have no patience.

They are usually half price or have a decent reduction on Black Friday, so might be worth holding off until then.

MCC85 · 13/10/2018 20:05

Also, your t.v. will need a usb port to use one.

Shadowboy · 13/10/2018 20:09

We watch amazon prime via our Apple TV.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 13/10/2018 20:21

apple tv DS got a second hand one for £15 it mirrors anything from i phone or i pad screen to TV by airdrop.

helly29 · 13/10/2018 20:21

Definitely wait until black Friday for the fire stick - got ours for £25 last year. Really useful - can also watch iplayer/YouTube etc on it.

There's also an app that you can use to control the fire stick, though the remote is handy.

Clutterfreeintraining · 13/10/2018 20:23

MCC - might hold off a few weeks then. Although, ds thinks our tv doesn’t have an USB port so I should probably check that first.

Shadow - is Apple TV similar to the fire stick?

Ds has a PS4 which I could have watched it through but it moved up to his room last Christmas, supposedly just while we had visitors and it’s still up there! Hmm I did suggest he bring it back down but that didn’t go too well Grin

This is my biggest issue with amazon prime. I find it so inaccessible.
Netflix at least has a channel within virgin to be able to watch it.
My mum recently played the film on her laptop and plugged it into the tv with the hdmi to stream through but I couldn't get over it using two pieces of technology at the same time.

AtiaoftheJulii · 13/10/2018 21:57

We have 3 fire sticks, at least two bought on black Friday Grin I find them really easy to use and you can do everything on them - Amazon video, Netflix, iPlayer, itv hub, all 4,, YouTube, etc etc. You need an HDMI port on your tv, not usb.

My only complaint is that the remotes are quite small and get lost, but you can, as mentioned, download an app to use as a remote.

I bought my parents one last Christmas and wasn't sure whether they'd use it much - they watch a lot of iPlayer on laptop/desktop - but they love it and my dad told me it was their best present Grin

You can use an xbox or playstation to watch Amazon. That's what I do.

If you are looking for things to watch, you should try Outlander. It's even better on a full sized screen.

Amortentia · 13/10/2018 23:33

You can watch Amazon prime from a BT box, fire stick, Xbox, and I think the PlayStation. You used to be able to watch it from a Wii but I’m not sure if that’s still the case. So, if you already have one of these devices it would save you having to get another.

Shadowboy · 14/10/2018 08:40

Apple TV has loads of channels on it-amazon prime is one of about 20. So you just turn the little box on and pick the channel and log in. It’s other beneficial feature is that it mirrors your phone or iPad too. We used to FaceTime through the tv as it was a bigger screen.

Clutterfreeintraining · 14/10/2018 14:46

Thanks for the replies Smile

I’ve spent the last hour looking through the ‘stick’ options and still can’t make a decision!!

I think I’m going to just carry on watching on my iPad for now

Or you could Chromecast to your TV? It's like the fire stick, but it means you can put any screen onto your TV. You can 'cast' Amazon music from your phone too

iloveredwine · 14/10/2018 15:13

I second google chrome cast. much easier

holidaylady · 14/10/2018 16:29

Other apps use Chromecast too, the Disney life app does

Clutterfreeintraining · 14/10/2018 18:06

I’ll have a look. Thank you
