New career

I want a career. I've just turned 40, had my first child young and have gone from job to job but never built up a career.
I've worked in shops/supermarkets, pubs, kitchens, nurseries/preschools and am currently a house keeper in a hotel.
The only qualifications I have are in childcare, I completed an nvq level 3 a few years back.
I don't want just a job anymore. I want a career that I can build on and enjoy and be challenged by. I just have no idea in what.
Am I too old to study? I have 4 children and would need to keep working part time.
Those who have studied or started a career later in life, what do you do and why?
