Tell me about Jaywick in Essex...

Due to various reasons including health issues, I'm considering moving to a cheap house where I can be mortgage free. There's various areas I've been considering and I know most of them reasonably well, but the one closest to my "home patch" is Jaywick on the Essex coast & I know virtually nothing about the area.

I get the impression it's a bit of a retirement type area, and I do know that most of the housing isn't traditional brick & tile so can't be mortgaged but the while idea is that I wouldn't need one anyway. But that's it, I know nothing else about the area.

So if any kind MNers know the area at all, I'd appreciate any info they may have!

I remember it being featured on one of the benefits bashing programmes. Think it was one of the most deprived areas on the UK? Underinvestment in infrastructure, low employment opportunities too? Doesn't sound great.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 10/10/2018 16:28

It is not a nice area at all. Lots of people I know wouldn't go there after dark. And they grew up there.

MsRinky · 10/10/2018 16:29

It is the most deprived place in England and resembles a shanty town. Huge flood risk. Unemployment and drug abuse endemic. Don't do it!

PinkHeart5914 · 10/10/2018 16:29

Rough as hell. Seriously don’t do it!

rockchickchickyrock · 10/10/2018 16:29

It featured on ‘Skint’ you might be able to find it if you search YouTube or which ever channel it was on.

Allergictoironing · 10/10/2018 16:30

Thanks guys. Looks like it's Norfolk or St Austell for me then!

I refer to this map a lot

One of the most deprived areas of the U.K. serious problems associated with poverty, serious underinvestment by the county and local council for years (more pot hole than actual roads- this includes the pavements). Houses run down in appearance outside and not many amenities. However, it has a good community spirit.
My advice would be to look in the day, in the evening and at the weekend. Good luck

TheThirdOfHerName · 10/10/2018 16:31

Channel 5 made a whole series about it (Benefits by the Sea).

mrsjackrussell · 10/10/2018 16:31

As above but the benefits programme was a couple of years ago so may have got better

TopBitchoftheWitches · 10/10/2018 16:33

No, no, no....just no !

I live ld in Colchester mist of my life and now a town just outside. Jaywick is not a nice place.

Allergictoironing · 10/10/2018 16:34

BiscuitDrama that map has a red area about 1/2 mile from my current home!

I've seen the tv show about it and read about it too. It looks like a shanty town....seriously shocking that it exists in modern day Britain.

PerspicaciaTick · 10/10/2018 16:36

I would be very cautious. I know there is a tight knit community, but there are a lot of problems. It is also a high risk flood area and suffers from a lot of coastal erosion.
This article seems a reasonable summary

Knittedfairies · 10/10/2018 16:37

We drove through it last year; I wouldn’t want to live there.

Ormally · 10/10/2018 16:38

Yes, some areas of it quite stigmatized locally, and most people don't tend to speak that well of it. I would also not have characterized it as a retirement area - maybe thinking more of Clacton?

I also seem to remember it isn't too well connected in terms of transport by comparison with other places around there so maybe that's relevant to you too.

Borntobeamum · 10/10/2018 16:48

That map is very interesting!
We've just moved fro, a red/orange are to a nice shade of green!!

RomanyRoots · 10/10/2018 16:50

most deprived area in the country, high unemployment and crime.
featured on benefit programmes.
My Uncle lives there and if he wasn't so old would move, he says it's a cesspit.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/10/2018 16:53

Well that maps incredible but there's one bit that's really flawed - it's got the whole of the Millenium Dome/O2 area as 'most deprived'

There are hundreds of flats going up there - 600k plus Confused

Finfintytint · 10/10/2018 17:01

Used to police that area many moons ago. Don’t do it OP.
