Please help me settle an argument - how do you pronounce creosote?

DH and DSs pronounce it differently to me and insist that I’m wrong.
Can you write phonetically how you pronounce it?

BonfiresOfInsanity · 10/10/2018 12:23

BonfiresOfInsanity · 10/10/2018 12:23

user1483387154 · 10/10/2018 12:23

LemonysSnicket · 10/10/2018 12:23

TheMatriarch · 10/10/2018 12:24

Sowt to rhyme with moat?

TaggieRR · 10/10/2018 12:24

Yes matriarch

AviatorShades · 10/10/2018 12:25

cree-o-sote - and where can I buy some, please? I think it's banned now and it's great for my fences. And I love the smell Smile

SuperSharpShooter · 10/10/2018 12:25

Cree - a - soat

ByeGermsByeWorries · 10/10/2018 12:25

Cree o soat. Used to smell amazing Grin

stellabird · 10/10/2018 12:26

Kree - ah- soat said quickly.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 10/10/2018 12:26

I love the smell too. I remmber walking home from school in the summer where one of the neighbours would cerosote his long, long fence and I would just breathe deeply the whole way.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 10/10/2018 12:27

How do you pronounce it Matriarch?

BiscuitDrama · 10/10/2018 12:27

Kree-ah-sote

Or Kreeh-uh-sote maybe.

Slight emphasis on Kree.

How else can you say it?

TheMatriarch · 10/10/2018 12:27

Does anyone pronounce it creo-sort?

That’s how dh and dss say it.
They have Yorkshire accents but take the piss out of me (with slight Yorkshire accent) saying creosote.

Ds has been at work this morning creosoting fences, if anyone likes the smell you’re welcome to him, he stinks!

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 10/10/2018 12:28

Cree ohh soat

You’re right. But is it just accent?

hmmwhatatodo · 10/10/2018 12:30

That’s just their Yorkshire accent coming through but you are pronouncing it properly. Bit silly of them to be laughing at you!

BonfiresOfInsanity · 10/10/2018 12:31

creo sort is nonsense. My DH is from Yorkshire and he doesn't say it like that.

Pascha · 10/10/2018 12:31

I say soat but if I say creosort I hear Yorkshire in my voice (I'm from Kent). I would have said it's just a strong accent you're hearing.

Feellikeimthemaid · 10/10/2018 12:31

Oh, I love the smell of fresh 'cree-oh-soat' on a fence!

I think you're pronouncing it correctly OP, but I can see how a broad accent, particularly a Yorkshire one, could distort the end sound.
