Do I need to see the GP about this?

Tonight I was drinking some water, it went down the wrong way but suddenly I found myself really choking quite badly and I literally couldn’t breathe. I was kind of coughing and gasping for air at the same time and it lasted a couple of minutes. I had a similar shorter episode a few weeks ago.

In the past i’ve had drinks go down the wrong way and it’s just a quick splutter and done. I’ve never felt like this and literally not been able to breathe so I was quite scared. But I don’t know how common this is? Whether it is dangerous or I’m just being over dramatic!?

It's a design flaw in human anatomy. Air, food and water all share one narrow tube. In this case the water probably just went a bit deeper than usual.

If it really seems to become a pattern see your doc. Otherwise, pretty normal.

Thanks. I don't like to go and see the GP over every little thing but it was quite scary at the time.
