What do you think is the purpose of life?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately and just wondering what other people's views might be. I feel it's still seen that a woman's purpose is to reproduce and after recently discovering I can't have children, feel a little depressed by it all!

Firstly, I am so sorry that you've discovered you can't have children - that must be a tough blow. I can see how that would make you question everything. Is there anyone you can talk to about this properly? Could you have some counselling?

I struggle with the larger purpose of life question. I often feel speck-like as one of 9 billion humans on a tiny planet in the massive universe and wonder what the point of our 80 odd years of existence is. We are all busy doing stuff, but I'm not sure long-term if it has any meaning. If I think about it too much my mind boggles.

I don't think we really have a purpose. We're being created by others in our species.

We don't ask to be born. We have no ultimate end point in life.

A bee for instance - it's purpose is to produce honey and pollination. We don't have such a purpose.

It depends on YOUR purpose in life. You make it what it is. For me, it's being steady in respect of my mental health, enjoying my home, free time and family.

Well to keep life going we reproduce and to make room for new life, we die. I don't think the purpose of life is to reproduce though. I don't know what it is, but I don't think that's it, because ultimately our offspring also die.

prettygreywalls · 09/10/2018 14:50

Don't we all find a purpose and pursue it ? Not necessarily a biological one ? Mine is to eat as much top quality ice cream as humanly possible , I find I'm rather good at it butter like most things could improve with practice ( thankfully I enjoy practicing too )

The only real purpose of life is to use it as best as you can for yourself because that is all there is. That can mean helping others as being rewarding for some people but ultimately everything must be about you and your happiness.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 09/10/2018 14:59

I'm going philosophical here but I also think the good and bad we do is noticed by a higher power. I believe there is a God but I don't think that it's religion.

The purpose of a species as a whole is to perpetuate the species and colonise the land for our purpose. But there's more to humans that that. Even if you took the survival of the species approach, not every animal within a population would produce young, but they would be involved in fighting off predators, gathering food etc. In humans that extends in a while myriad of directions in that most adults play a part in creating a functional society.

However, our individual purpose is much simpler imo. To find and perpetuate kindness, love, happiness etc.
I'm so sorry you've had the news you've had. Only you and time know where you go from here but you are SO much more that the functioning of a few internal organs

PinkHeart5914 · 09/10/2018 15:02

I’m not sure life has a point as such, it starts then it ends it’s just a cycle.....

Just have fun, do what makes you happy as your not getting another go round

loserlikeme · 09/10/2018 15:16

Thanks everyone. And thank you margo and sleeping you're right, I'm more than my internal organs! It's been the end of a long series of medical problems and tests and we knew what the outcome was going to be, still a shock though and makes you rethink life.

prettygreywalls I absolutely love your way of thinking! I need to find a passion like that!

So far I've come to the conclusion that our purpose is to make a positive impact on the earth and others.

It's so interesting to think about though when you get really into it.
