I’m too scruffy with no fashion sense - advice the shops & what to buy

Advice needed! Now the weather has turned, I’ve realised that I am down to one pair of faded trousers for work. Blush So I desperately need to buy some more clothes. I hate shopping and am terrible at putting items together. I don’t know where to start.

Work wise - I want to aim for smart but not too formal (no suits or heels needed).
Outside of work - I live in jeans but just shove on old jumpers.

I find that even if I have a nice pair of trousers I generally don’t have shoes to go with etc.

Shopping is made more difficult as I’m quite tall and high street shops don’t seem to have bottoms that are long enough. I usually try and buy some with large hems to take down, but often I can’t find much.

Which shops / online shops should I start with? Are there staple pieces I should start with first?

What's your budget? You could try a personal shopper at a large department store.

I could come and stand next to you, then you will look really smart Grin

I always go for dresses for work. You just pull em on and don't have to worry about what goes with what. Dress, tights, boots is my default work combo.

I have a capsule wardrobe because I travel for work and prefer trousers to dresses, so I have about a week's worth of clothes that can either be worn at home or on the road. The base palette is navy, grey, white and then I wear gold jewellery. Shoes are red, grey, snakeskin or nude. So I currently have:

  • white short sleeve blouse
  • white long sleeve blouse
  • navy long sleeve blouse
  • grey merino wool jumper
  • navy merino wool jumper
  • navy blazer
  • red blazer
  • grey blazer
  • navy trousers
  • grey trousers
  • and NEW for this season(!!) wool pinstripe trousers

So basically, every single thing matches with every single other thing and I can mix and match without really thinking about it. I have a couple of pieces of gold jewellery, and I usually wear plum or pillar box red lipstick.

I have a colleague who wears head to toe black every day. Nobody has ever said a word about it.

Most of my clothes come from Uniqlo and they have a free hemming and alteration service in store: www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/company/faq/alterations

Zara do as well but I don't like Zara's clothes much...

My recomendation:
Black Burton's Trousers (yes, mens) because they are comfortable and have pockets, and because I can measure myself and buy that size unlike womens' sizes.
Smart, but not suit or power-dressing.
