Help me find this book from my childhood

So, around the late 1980s I had this book that was like a puzzle. You are the main character and you start on a certain page and make decisions which determine what page you go to next (turn left p64, or turn right p120). You have to find out the name of a creature to escape the world you’re stuck in, there are pages where you’ve taken the wrong path and you die so must go back to the beginning. There was a forest, a cliff, a jungle. I can’t think of the name and I would really like to get it for my DD.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 08/10/2018 06:24

Unfortunately you've described the plot of most of the Chose Your Own Adventure books. Narrowing it down might be difficult! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choose_Your_Own_Adventure

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 08/10/2018 06:29

Haha, fab thanks! I’ll have to go through them and see. That was quick work, I knew I was asking the right people!

I had a crystal maze book like this, i loved it.

LaDaronne · 08/10/2018 08:09

I loved these. Quoted one in my MA dissertation Grin

PumpkinsMum18 · 08/10/2018 08:11

I had a Famous Five book like this. It was amazing! Had all these dice and things that you used to choose the next part of the story. I think there was also Goosebump books like this, called ‘choose your own scare’ or something like that?

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 08/10/2018 08:59

Thanks, my DD loves goosebumps so I’ll look it up. Looking for Christmas ideas already.

Wernt Nancy Drew also like this?

SpoonBlender · 08/10/2018 09:05

Nancy Drew were mostly straight up YA novels, but I think there were one or two choose-your-own-adventure ones. Never one where she got it on with the Hardy Boys though, much to my disappointment.

RangeRider · 08/10/2018 09:08

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain?

LaDaronne · 08/10/2018 10:16

I'm sure there must be Nancy Drew fanfic porn out there somewhere SpoonBlender.

Enb76 · 08/10/2018 10:19

I had a choose your own adventure and generally chose to get eaten by the army ants in the forest.

My daughter now reads a whole bunch of these with dice to determine what happens, but mine were straight forward: go down left hand path turn to page 23, go down right hand path turn to page 64

BluthsFrozenBananas · 08/10/2018 10:24

It could have been one of the Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone Fighting Fantasy series. Full list here

I remember buying the first one - think it was The Cave of Time.

KingLooieCatz · 08/10/2018 10:43

Thanks for reminding me!

I remember DB being right into these. DS minigeek would love them, they've just been wishlisted for him. Perfect if DB is looking for gift ideas.

2pointfourmonkeys · 08/10/2018 10:47

What age do you think these books work for?

Enb76 · 08/10/2018 10:52

What age do you think these books work for?

My daughter was about to turn 9 when she really got into them.

Muddlingalongalone · 08/10/2018 10:57

I loved these - I think we collected tokens and got them from cereal.

LaDaronne · 08/10/2018 11:10

Yes, eight to nine is perfect age-wise. I've still got a copy of the Shamutanti Hills knocking around somewhere, it's got a lion with a scorpion's tail on the cover.

doctorboo · 08/10/2018 11:34

You are all fab. Christmas presents for my eldest son and nephew have been sorted.

SpoonBlender · 09/10/2018 00:20

@LaDaronne I'm both certain that you're right, and sure that I'm not going to search for it to find out!
