Did you take part in any musical or theatre productions in secondary school ? I was in The Factory Children and Sweeney Todd.

I was a mere chorister on both occasions. We did The Factory Children in June 1983 and Sweeney Todd a year later. I suspect the latter bore no resemblance to anything involving Stephen Sondheim or Johnny Depp. Both were hard work but ultimately rewarding. I can still remember many of the songs, we rehearsed that much !

Yes, Wizard of Oz in full 4 part harmony in 1980.

IndigoSpritz · 07/10/2018 20:15

Sounds ambitious. I don't think we managed four part harmonies but the harmonies we did came by accident rather than instruction and worked remarkably well.

Return to the Forbidden Planet and Dracula Spectacular.

Rockbird · 07/10/2018 20:27

Godspell, The Mikado and HMS Pinafore Hmm

Greenandcabbagelooking · 07/10/2018 20:30

Joseph, twice.
Grease
Slice of Saturday Night
Oliver.

I still remember a surprising amount of words to all of them, bar Slice!

IndigoSpritz · 07/10/2018 20:35

Vampire, Dracula Spectacular was one of ours before I was in secondary school. Memorable because the lead was played by the same oikish git who played the lead in Smike the year before. Don't know how that happened.

On reflection these productions were a little corny, with a limited (woodwind, drums and piano) band and wannabes who feigned an American accent to disguise their lack of singing ability. But, much work went into them and the school staff and parents were always hugely appreciative.

Yes, but never on stage - down in the orchestra pit.

Salad Days, Big Al (Capone), The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof.

Lots of fun.

I was in grease (a dancer), one called dazzle (based on a spaceship ) and a show in year ten called lady chill in which I was one of the 4 main characters and had to rap 😂😎. We even had to perform it at a show festival thing .

ja9r · 07/10/2018 21:04

Clairee inSteel Magnolias. Sigh. Good times...

PrivateParkin · 07/10/2018 21:06

Yes! But I only painted the scenery. We did My Fair Lady (brilliant - we had stairs and everything on stage) and Hello Dolly.

IndigoSpritz · 07/10/2018 21:54

In between times the school put on a Christmas production called Rock Nativity. I think David Wood was the creative force behind RN. I opted out due to musical differences but I bought a ticket and went to watch it anyway. It was well presented but utterly naff. I'm glad I kept away !

I played Annie in Annie

SondheimFan · 07/10/2018 22:39

Nancy in Oliver and the Reverend Mother in The Sound of Music. Grin

VenusClapTrap · 07/10/2018 23:07

I was an Indian Brave in Annie Get Your Gun, Henry Morganthau in Annie (that well known character), and Ali Hakim in Oklahoma. Always a male character (girls’ school). Bizarrely, I was told to play Ali Hakim with an Italian accent.

ClosestThingToCrazy · 07/10/2018 23:20

I played in the band for our shows. We did Funny Girl and Sweet Charity.

I also played in the band for a private school a few towns over that hired in musicians so they'd have a better band than using their own students. That was for Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical.
